Swimming
During Weeks 3 & 4 the students enjoyed an intensive 9-day swimming program. It was great to see them learn new strokes and improve their style and stamina in the pool. It was also pleasing to observe our students displaying great independence in managing their belongings and dressing themselves each day. We only had a few lonely socks!!
Unit of Inquiry – Meal Worms
As part of our Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, the students have been tracking the lifecycle of the Meal Worm. They have learnt about the four stages Meal Worms go through from egg, larva and pupa to adult. We hope that our Meal Worms transform into adult beetles during the term. Millie & Mara took action at home building a home for our Meal Worms with a heat lamp to keep them warm and assist them to transform. Well done girls! Finlay added to the girls home by making a charming sign. He also brought in his Goliath Stick Insects, ‘Sticky & Twiggy’ for the class to see. It was very exciting to watch them paying together.
Text Study – Fantastic Mr Fox
After many weeks of studying the text Fantastic Mr Fox we have completed the book. The students learnt many new words to add to their vocabulary lists and enjoyed following the adventures of Mr Fox, Badger, and Rat. Throughout the text the students discussed many topics which included, teamwork, sharing, and never giving up. They also explored how the author and illustrator build suspense throughout the story by choosing specific dialogue and illustrations to keep the reading wanting more. On completion of the text, we all sat down together to watch the movie which everyone enjoyed.
Incursion – Marvelous Mini Beasts
On Tuesday 11 August, the Year 2 students participated in a Marvellous Minibeasts Incursion. It was a fabulous interactive experience where the students met many different insects. They were able to touch and see up close Stella the leafy stick insect, Claude the freshwater Crayfish and, Stan the stick insect, along with many beautiful Monarch Butterflies which they fed. They learnt many interesting facts including that all insects have wings, Moths weave silk around themselves and butterflies have taste buds in their feet. It was such a great experience!
Excursion – Melbourne Museum & IMax
On Monday 17th August we set off on our excursion to the Melbourne Museum and Imax Theatre. It was a fabulous day filled with fun and adventure. The students explored the Bugs Alive Exhibition where they observed many different species of Spiders, Butterflies, Scorpions, Ants, Flies and Beetles.
Following this it was off to the IMAX cinema to watch the Flight of the Butterflies. The students were very excited to wear their 3D glasses and enjoyed trying to catch and touch butterflies throughout the movie.
The movie followed the flight journey and lifecycle of the Monach Butterfly. It was a fascinating story. To end our day the students participated in an interactive Lesson on Living Things. They learnt about Mini Beasts, Pollination and Predators.
