Book Week 2025 is upon us!

August 16-23 is Book Week, promoted by The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), a National not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation that aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians.

The CBCA is also celebrating 80 Years, having been founded in 1945! In 1946, the annual Book of the Year Awards started, to promote Australian books of high literacy and artistic quality for children.

There are six categories of Awards that judges vote on:

  • Older Reader (13-18 years);
  • Younger Reader (7-12 years);
  • Early Childhood (0-6 years);
  • Picture Book of the Year (0-18 years);
  • Eve Pownall Award (0-18 years), Information books;
  • Award for New Illustrator (0-18 years).

There are also the Shadow Judging Awards, which Junior School students have participated in, by listening to or reading the shortlisted books -

They have then voted on their favourite book in each category to be entered into the Award, along with other Australian school students. This has proved to be an enjoyable and worthwhile venture for all!

Each year of the Awards there is a different theme, and the theme for this year is “Book an Adventure”.

As part of Book Week celebrations, the Senior Library has a display of all the current shortlisted titles for Older Readers, along with past Winners and Honours books held in the collection. Students can borrow any item on the display shelves.

The Junior Schools have an author visit on Tuesday 19th August organised by Mrs Gaye Verhoeven, with Naomi Crew, who will be talking about her book “Bowers of blue”. Both Junior School sites also have Book Week parades planned, and classroom door displays. It promises to be a fun-filled day!

Anyone can “Book an Adventure”just pick up any Book and Read, fiction or non-fiction - learn about other people, cultures, experiences, lives, stories!

Happy Reading!
