From the Head of Sport

Head of Sport Report

This week I would like to send out a big thank you to the maintenance staff. They have been on top of keeping the fields looking immaculate. Last weekend we had 7 football games and 2 hockey games and a lot of compliments were given by the opposing schools. Despite the rain they enjoyed playing on such beautiful fields.

In the Sports Centre we have been having issues with our netball goals and stability. This was remedied last week by maintenance and there was a notable difference at Saturday’s games. Thank you for all the time you put into maintaining our fields and equipment.

Summer Sport

The summer survey has gone out this week to all students. Please ensure that this is completed promptly as trials will commence in Week 8 for all our summer sports.

Congratulations

Last weekend marked the conclusion of the regular season, and this week a number of our teams will be competing in semi-finals across various venues. We encourage parents, families, and friends to come along and support our players as they play for a spot in the grand finals.

Why not don some navy and gold and join the BMGS support team.

Parking

Players are required to be at the venue a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of the game. With many venues having little parking I would be giving at least 10 minutes extra to finding a parking spot.

Touring Teams

Well done to all those students who played in the games against The Weydon School from the UK. Whilst the standard was very high it was good to see that all the BMGS players continued in good spirit for the full duration of the game.

Thanks to all those parents and staff who helped out either as part of team support or with the afternoon tea. Your time was greatly appreciated and we received many positive comments from The Weydon School.

BMGS Football MIC Report

A massive congratulations to all teams for a successful 2025 football season. We finished the regular rounds with 5 teams qualifying for semi-finals games. I’d like to say well done to our 13 Boys (Year 7s) and Junior Girls teams on a season filled with highs and lows, but sadly they didn’t qualify for semi-finals.

We’d love for our school community to get out and support our semi-finals if possible. We start the day with a double header for our boys and girls First XI teams, please come and support them:

  • Girls First XI – Home game at 9am
  • Boys First XI – Home game at 10.15am

Three other games will be held around Sydney, and the boys would love to see you there:

  • 14 Boys – Away game at 12noon at St Patricks College, Strathfield
  • 15 Boys – Away game at 2pm at St Pius X Playing Fields, Oxford Falls
  • 2nd XI Boys – Away game at 2pm at Hills Grammar Synthetic Fields

Football Match Reports Round 10 (9th August 2025)

13 Boys were defeated by Oakhill (0 – 3)

Cold, wet, soggy, and loads of fun.

This is why we get up at the early hours of Saturday morning...

Impressive performance from the u13s who had a bit of squad rotation and dealt with the elements and changing positions well. Maybe on a sunnier day both in the skies and the goal-scoring department we might have gotten some points but alas, final game of the season ends in a loss. Very proud of each and every one of the boys for their efforts and enthusiasm across the entire season.

By Connor Secker (13 Boys Coach)

14 Boys defeated Redlands (3 – 0)

On a very cold and misty morning we had team photographs before warming up for a 10.15am game. A sluggish start to the game before we asserted some dominance late in the first half with Thom scoring a great shot from distance. Audius was fouled and drew a penalty to sink his first goal.

We continued to dominate in the second half with good defensive play. We showed improved passing and intuitive game play with the opposition pressing harder to even the score. Another goal from Audius resulted from good attacking pressure. Overall the team boated good cohesive soccer and deserved the 3-0 win.

15 Boys were defeated by St Spyridon’s Collage (3 – 2)

This week we played our final home game and game of the regular season. We faced off against Spyros who we had beaten in the reverse fixture. Despite the rain and mist the game proceeded.

We started the game with great intensity. Playing some excellent football, some of the best of our entire season, but we just couldn’t convert.  We came into half time 1-0 down. The boys were a bit disheartened but we all felt that we deserved more and we were going to get more in the second half. Oli broke into the box and was pushed over. We received a penalty that Paddy dispatched excellently. Spyros gained a freekick which was crossed into the box, missed by everyone in the middle and somehow found its way in. We pushed and pushed again for another equaliser. The spyros challenges were becoming slightly reckless and intense and it became hard to get a grip on the ball. They managed to break again and scored a 3rd. We had so many good opportunities. Their keeper was superb, saving everything we threw at him. It ended up being a 3-2 defeat. We had played our best game of the season and lost. This is football and life. Sometimes you can win and be outscored by the opponent just as you can lose and score more goals than them. The boys showed real class, quality and determination in the way they conducted themselves on the pitch. Personally, I am very proud of them. We need to take the lessons, move on and come together for our Semi Final next week.

By Will Groenewegen (15 Boys Coach)

Second XI Boys drew St Pauls Grammar (0 – 0)

After a season without a win last year, the boys set a goal to win a game. They did this early in the season, and more victories followed. We then set a new goal to make the semi-finals. On Saturday we needed a point against a very strong St Pauls team to achieve this goal. In pouring rain (the most fun conditions for football) the boys put in a typical gutsy display. It was very hard for both teams to keep hold of the ball and the game became a battle of attrition. And battle our lads did. We had a couple of chances to score, but just couldn't get that outstretched foot to make contact. St Pauls had a good chance late on but our captain and goalkeeper Toby was determined to see his team make the semi-finals and made an epic double save. The second one was absolutely the save of the season. This 0-0 draw was enough to see the boys make the semi-finals. Time to set another new goal.

By Tom Daniels (2nd XI Coach)

First XI Boys defeated St Patrick’s College (1 – 0)

In a tense and evenly matched game, the BMGS First XI boys delivered their best performance of the season against St Spyridon College. Both teams fought hard in the first half, with chances on goal for both teams. Xavier Stephens found the back of the net for BMGS, putting us ahead 1-0 at the end of the first half. The boys held strong under pressure in the second half, defending resolutely to secure the win. This result sees BMGS firsts boys undefeated for the season and Minor premiers. We advance to the semi-finals next week at home against Oxley College at 10:15, hoping to see a good number of supporters come and support the boys.

Well done, boys.

Let’s win that Championship title.

By Flynn Nicholls (Captain - Boys Football)

First XI Girls defeated St Spyridon (1 – 0)

The Firsts girls had the first game of the morning and, after a delayed start, immediately put pressure on the opposition. They created many goal scoring opportunities, until Lelia managed to score off a well delivered corner. The St Spyridon girls continued to press, and our defence kept them clear of the goal, to hold onto a 1-0 lead at the final whistle. The girls finish as undefeated minor premiers for the season, and will be playing at home this weekend in a semi-final against Redlands College.

By Mrs Sandie Naumann (Football MIC)

Junior Girls were defeated by St Spyridon (0 – 5)

The Junior soccer team's last game had tough competition, but they sadly ended up losing 5-0 at a home game to St Spyridon. Even though they lost, they had a couple close shots, some good defensive blocks and the spirits were high throughout the whole game.

BMGS Netball Match Reports

BMGS has had a big week of Netball….and who wouldn’t have it any other way?!

We started on Wednesday with games against the Weydon School from the UK. Thanks to our coaches and umpires for helping these games go ahead!

Here is a snippet from our Netball captain, Zara Perisce-Burrell:

Well…we can all confidently say we are international netballers!

What a great afternoon we had on Wednesday 6th August in the Sport Centre when we had 3 netball teams, of all ages, playing against the touring Weydon from the UK.

As we always see when our netball teams are hosting, there was kindness, laughter and great competition. They were teams that had been playing together and travelling together, and it showed. Being a part of this tour was a positive experience for us all, and we were all very happy that netball was on their agenda.

I want to thank everyone who played for never giving up, trying their hardest all the way through, and being incredibly supportive. Thanks also to the parents and carers who came along to watch and cheer. Special mention as always to the student and teacher umpires who officiated the games – you created a fair and competitive environment for us all. Thank-you!

We made friends, we learned about what their lives were like on the other side of the globe, and found out things like… Mountain High Pies have THE BEST pies in the world according to Weydon!

Thanks to everyone also for contributing to afternoon tea – the spread was incredible. Thanks to Ms Wade for organising BMGS pins to give to all the Weydon players.

We finished off with the Weydon Netball Leader and myself swapping First shirts as a sign of comradery and netball spirit.  We are now always connected.  (I just wish I hadn’t played in mine first 😊).

On Saturday it was the final round of the ISA season before we head into the finals series. Each team has shown significant improvement each week and have demonstrated values of teamwork and sportsmanship that they should be proud of. We wish our Seconds and Inters teams all the best as they progress into the Semi-Finals. If you are looking to get out and support these teams please join us at Barker College. We will need to cheer loud to overcome the home-ground advantage of our opponents!

It was exciting on Saturday to have the annual Firsts vs BMGS Alumni game. This game is hugely anticipated on the netball calendar each year. Not only does it provide a chance for leavers, teachers and current students to reconnect, it also provides a platform to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to many – Breast Cancer.

For the past few months, I have been working in the background with an ex-student Zoe Long, in addition to teaching staff, to pull together this event.

What feels so great is when the Alumni arrive into the Sports Centre, and there are lots of hugs and excitement to see one another. This is what a strong netball community, and Alumni, looks like! It was great to see Alannah Murray – 2024 Netball Captain – return to play!

Big thanks to the First team, and some of the Seconds team, for playing their second game of the morning and participating in this special event. We had a quick change into bright pink socks and headbands (…we looked amazing!) to take on the very polished and skillful Alumni. They were coached by the one and only Viki Stanton who made a huge impact on netball in BMGS for many years.

The game was fabulous and played with great spirit. We had a lot of laughs while still really trying hard and being competitive. At the end of the game, there were only 4 points in it. This year it was the current school netball team who came up with the win – I wonder what will happen next year?? In addition to this game raising awareness and funds for Breast Cancer, look out for other opportunities later in the year.

Thanks to all that participated!

Round 10 - BMGS Firsts vs Oakhill

This week’s match was a real thriller, with BMGS showing grit, determination, and incredible teamwork right until the final whistle. From the first centre pass, the players fought hard for every ball, with quick passes through the midcourt and strong drives into the goal circle. Our defenders put in an incredible performance, making some smart intercepts and keeping the opposition under constant pressure.

The score tightened throughout the game. In the third quarter, BMGS gave it everything, closing the gap to just three points. Despite the whole squad effort, Oakhill managed to pull back their lead in the final quarter for the win.

While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, the team’s determination, skill, and never-give-up attitude were great to watch. It was a performance to be proud of and an amazing one to round up the 2025 season.

Coach: Lauren Knussen

Round 10: BMGS Seconds vs Oakhill

This game marked a special moment for one of our players! For our Year 12 defender Gretel, it was her last home game of school sport - ever! This was the same as some of the Oakhill girls we played against. As always, we showed wonderful school spirit and had the First team and the Second teams from both schools, as well as spectators, and created a human tunnel for the Year 12s to run through as they took the court. It was a lovely way to congratulate them all.

Thanks to the consistency in training and effort from this whole team, the improvement is noticeable and allows us to be incredibly competitive. We threw all options at them trying to shut down the holding shooter and tall keeper. Our change of direction and footwork when attacking has really come on beautifully allowing us to retain more of the ball, more of the game. Our short and long options, as well as contesting every ball worked well for us.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a win for us this week, however we worked really hard and gave it our all. At the end of the round games, this team came in 3rd! Look out semi-finals – here we come!

As always, thanks to the incredible umpires for officiating a great game!

Coach: Mel Perisce

Round 10 – BMGS Inters v SACs

The Inters Team played a competitive game over the weekend, losing by just 1 point. With one player unavailable, Hannah Lord, stepped in at short notice and played brilliantly, showing great teamwork and confidence. The team fought hard from start to finish, keeping the pressure on and displaying the skills they’ve developed throughout the year. The players demonstrated the skills they’ve been working hard to develop all season; including quick passing, smart positioning, and strong communication on court. Their defensive pressure kept the opposition on their toes, and they honoured the efforts of their teammates by converting intercepts. It was a close game that reflected their dedication and improvement to training sessions all season long.

Coach: Isabelle Coote

Round 10 – BMGS Juniors vs SACs

Firstly, well done on a great season as well as a great final game!

This week's game was against SACS where they unfortunately took the win, 22-16. We started off really well, ahead at the end of the first quarter! It was rough in the circle and Hayley fell and hurt her knee but luckily Frankie stepped in for her first time at the attacking end. Shout out to Hayley who got back out there and played her best for the rest of the game! The next two quarters were tough as it moved from SACS being ahead, to us, to SACS and back again. Unfortunately, SACS was the stronger team, gradually breaking away in the last quarter and leaving us where we couldn't catch back up. Special mention to Hannah who had previously played an entire game for the Inters yet managed to put her all into playing another full game as Centre for us. Nice work girls! We hope to see you all on the court next year!
