Maths ideas for the holidays for Years F-2

Dear Parents and Carers,

The Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors, in partnership with the Department of Education and Victorian Catholic Education Authority (VCEA), have created a suite of mathematics video resources to promote consistent teaching approaches between school and home.

Included in these resources are practical, easy-to-follow videos for parents and carers of Foundation to Year 2 students, aligned with evidence-informed teaching practices to reinforce classroom learning.

The videos offer clear explanations and practical demonstrations designed to boost students’ confidence, fluency and understanding. Please feel free to view the videos and do the suggested activities with your children at home to consolidate their learning.

Videos are available on the following topics:

Please note, students in Foundation have not yet been explicitly taught how to partition numbers, and have not learnt teen numbers.

As children learn teen numbers, they can sometimes confuse “teen” numbers (like sixteen) with “ty” numbers (like sixty). When practising at home, listening carefully and gently correcting any mix-ups as they happen can really help. This supports children to build the right understanding from the start.

Kind regards,

Emma May
