What's On In Foundation

TERM 4 OVERVIEW
It has been so lovely to welcome everyone back after the holidays! The students have settled in beautifully and returned with happy smiles, ready for another term of learning and fun. This term, we will continue building on the skills they have learned, practising our classroom routines and expectations, and helping them grow in confidence and independence as they get ready for the exciting move to Year 1.
MATHS
In Maths, Foundation students will continue to build their number skills through fun, hands-on learning. They will explore numbers to 20, practise addition and subtraction, and learn about sharing and grouping. Students will also investigate patterns, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and Australian coins. They will explore length, weight and time, follow directions to move objects, and collect and compare information. Each week, Questacon activities will provide opportunities for students to solve problems, explore mathematical ideas and develop their thinking skills through engaging, hands-on challenges.
ENGLISH
This term in English, Foundation students will continue to build their reading, writing and speaking skills. They will practise their letters and sounds, improve their spelling and letter formation, and enjoy reading a range of decodable and predictable books. Students will learn simple strategies to help them understand what they read and explore how characters use words to persuade others, before creating their own simple persuasive texts. As we prepare for our excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, students will also explore First Nations stories, including Dreaming stories, and learn about the importance of caring for Country and community. Throughout the term, students will continue to build confidence in sharing their ideas, listening to others and expressing themselves.
INTEGRATED STUDIES
This term, our Geography unit is called First Nations Places. Students learn why Country is so important to First Nations Peoples and how land, animals, stories and traditions are connected. Students will share places that are special to them and explore how people care for and respect places that are meaningful to them. Through stories, drawing and mapping, students will develop an understanding of the importance of connection to Country and Place. To finish the unit, we will enjoy an excursion to Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne later this term. We will share more information with families in the coming weeks.
WELLBEING
This term, students will explore what makes them unique, including their likes, dislikes, interests and hopes for the future. They will learn that everyone is different and that our interests and dreams are not limited by whether we are a boy or a girl. Students will also explore how to be both strong and gentle, play fairly, and treat others with kindness and respect. Through discussions and activities, they will learn to recognise unkind behaviour, understand how it can make others feel, and discover ways to stand up for others and help everyone feel safe, included and valued.
During our Cyber Safety sessions, students will explore how people can experience big feelings when using technology. They will learn how to show kindness and empathy online, use caring words and actions, and stand up for others. These lessons will help students make safe and kind choices and create positive online communities.
