In Performing Arts these past 2 weeks, students have been exploring two exciting areas of music learning: the four instrument families and music dynamics

We’ve been diving into how instruments are grouped based on how they produce sound, learning about the Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion families. Students have enjoyed discovering what makes each family unique—whether it’s the way a ukulele strings vibrate, how air travels through a flute, or how a drum creates sound when struck. They’ve been listening to examples, identifying instruments, and even trying some hands‑on activities to deepen their understanding.

Alongside this, we’ve been learning about music dynamics—the “volume” or expressive louds and softs in music. Students have been learning how musicians use dynamics like piano (soft), forte (loud), (more Italian – Signorina Cardamone would be proud!).

Through listening games, singing, and playing classroom instruments, they’re discovering how dynamics help create mood, emotion, and storytelling in music.

It’s been a wonderfully creative unit, and students are developing both their musical vocabulary and their listening skills. We look forward to sharing more musical discoveries as the term continues!

Singing, dancing and signing off!
