Bridging Centre - Freddie the Fish and Our River Systems

This week in STEAM, students explored the importance of healthy waterways through the story “Freddie the Fish.” The lesson followed Freddie on his journey down a river system as he encountered different types of pollution—rubbish, chemical run-off, abandoned machinery, picnic litter, and other human impacts that affect fish and their habitats.

To bring Freddie’s journey to life, students took part in a hands-on science investigation. As each new pollutant appeared in the story, students added a safe, simulated substance to Freddie’s water container. They watched how quickly the clean water changed and discussed how these impacts make it difficult for fish and other creatures to survive.

Through this activity, students learned about:

  • how pollution enters our rivers
  • the effects on living things in freshwater ecosystems
  • the role humans play in protecting our environment

The activity sparked thoughtful conversations, and students showed great curiosity and empathy for the natural world. Ask your child what happened to Freddie and how we can help keep our waterways clean!

F–2 STEAM – Plant Growing Update

Our F–2 students have been learning about how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy. Each child planted either a mung bean or a snow pea, and we hope their little plant is growing happily at home! We wish all our young gardeners the very best of luck as they continue caring for their plants. We can’t wait to hear how they grow!

Stay happy,

Mrs Whiteley
