From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 families!

Thank you for another great fortnight. We have now passed the halfway mark of the term and are looking forward to the long weekend ahead. The children have well and truly settled into the routines of Grade 1 and are showing wonderful independence each day.

It has been lovely to see their confidence growing—whether it’s organising their own belongings, moving smoothly through our morning routines, or showing greater responsibility during learning time. The class has been working beautifully together, supporting one another and demonstrating our school values in so many small but meaningful ways.

Take Home Readers - Please remember, students are to return their blue reader satchels and log books every FRIDAY.

 Literacy

We have been working very hard and revising our learning about phonemes (sounds) and how to sound out words and transfer that learning when we read and write. We have jumped straight into some learning about various digraphs such asth as in feather (voiced or hard th), th as in thumb (unvoiced or soft th) oo as in moon, oo as in book, ng as in swing.

Our tricky words we have learnt are:  said, are, her, was, very, you, put, have, were, here, what, want, they

⭐ If you are looking for a challenge at home or some extra learning, please practise spelling these tricky words! ⭐

Over the past fortnight we have challenged ourselves to write ‘super’ sentences. We know a ‘super’ sentence needs a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, it makes sense and ends in correct punctuation.

We loved reading Edwina the Emu and discussing who?, action and where? words from the book. We then came up with our own sentences to describe what was happening. We also came up with some fabulous facts about emus!

We are excited to explore the picture story book; Let’s get a Pup by Bob Graham. We will explore different joining words to extend our sentences, using adjectives (describing words) and even some persuasive writing!

Maths-

We have enjoyed using materials to create two and three digit numbers. We have made numbers, written numbers, ordered numbers and compared the value of numbers. We spent a lot of time ‘bundling’ or partitioning numbers, which means we partitioned numbers into groups of tens and ones. We also explored the concept of number bonds. This means we can break numbers apart and identify what they are made up of. Eg 34 can be broken into 30 and 4.

We have also been working hard on counting to at least 120, forwards and backwards! Counting backwards can be tricky, so we have practised this a lot.

Religion – Lent and Easter

This week we move into our new topic of ‘Lent and Easter’. In this unit we will identify Lent as a special time in the Church, recount the key events of Holy Week and the first East Sund and recognise signs and symbols associated with Lent and Easter. Throughout the unit, we will also explore different Project Compassion stories. Students will reflect on how these stories encourage us to think about helping others, making compassionate choices, and understanding the importance of giving during Lent.

Inquiry

This week we have explored how we can make our classroom healthy, safe, active and fun through movement.
