College Captains Term 1 Reflection

In Term 1, we had many events like interschool sport, Harmony Day, Athletics Day, and we did have a teacher strike day. This term was very good, being able to get to know our teachers and fellow classmates and having fun events like the ones below:

Harmony Day

On Harmony Day, all students were able to dress up in their cultural clothing, and throughout the day we did a series of activities that let us talk about our cultures and backgrounds in the classroom with our mentor groups. It was very enjoyable, and towards the end of the day we had some students participate in a Harmony Day performance. It was very nice to see all students showing their cultures and their dances, led by Miss Lilo, Mr Rabici, and Miss Pothapragada. All three teachers did their best to help students embrace their culture with dances.

Teacher strike day

Victorian public school teachers went on strike on Tuesday, March 24th. Approximately 35,000 teachers and school staff participated in a 24-hour strike and marched to Parliament House to demand better pay and working conditions, marking the first such strike in 13 years, with our school participating in that strike. Years 8–9 were asked to stay home as teachers joined the rally against their pay, which is lower than other parts of the country.

Athletics Day

During Athletics Day, we had all four houses competing in a series of events, including long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, and running events. All houses gave it their all, and it was very good to see everyone participating. On Athletics Day, we had some journalism students taking photos of different events, students, and teachers. It was nice to see students getting included in that. Overall, it was a good day, and us college captains really enjoyed it. Let’s hope to see some records broken.

Overall, the first term is done. It has been eventful but a lot of fun. Everyone has started the year meeting new people and experiencing new things, settling into their new classes, and especially for the Year 7s coming to high school at a completely different school with new people and teachers, and the Year 9s experiencing their electives for the first time. The first term has been good, and us as college captains can’t wait to continue leading this school alongside the rest of the leadership team.
