Sailing, Teamwork and Challenge: VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation Sailing Camp

Across three action-packed days, our Unit 3&4 VCE/VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation students travelled to the Victorian Sailing School for an unforgettable sailing camp. The camp provided students with the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills required to sail a small boat in controlled conditions, while putting their classroom learning into practice in a challenging and highly practical environment. The camp was also an important opportunity for students to consolidate their knowledge from the units Coaching Foundation Level Participants, Facilitate Groups and Participate in Workplace Health and Safety, particularly through hazard identification, risk assessment and the implementation of appropriate risk controls. Most importantly, it provided a chance for students to celebrate their achievements and the culmination of their two-year VET journey before completing their final examination.

Day One began with a theory session covering essential sailing skills, terminology, wind conditions and boat handling. Students also learnt about the capsizing recovery process, knowledge that would prove to be particularly useful later in the day. Students then completed hazard identification and risk assessments, considering the potential risks associated with sailing and the control measures used to make the activity as safe as possible.

After learning how to rig their boats, students headed onto the water in groups of three in the Envy boats. Despite slightly stronger winds, students eagerly embraced the challenge of sailing independently. For all students, it was their first experience sailing a boat, yet they quickly developed their skills and demonstrated excellent teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

The capsizing recovery training also became a very practical lesson, with two boats capsizing during the afternoon, much to the amusement of the students, particularly as the two staff members were aboard one of them! Students were able to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice and safely recover their boats before continuing their sailing experience.

After an afternoon on the water, students enjoyed a mix of recreational and physical activities, including beach cricket, shopping and preparing dinner before heading to indoor rock climbing and bouldering. All students pushed themselves outside their comfort zones and challenged themselves physically to master some of the most challenging bouldering courses and rock-climbing walls.

Day Two provided perhaps the best real-life example of the importance of risk assessment and risk controls. With stronger winds making it unsafe to sail the smaller Envy boats in the same conditions, students were required to adapt their plans. They extended their knowledge of weather charts and wind conditions before being introduced to the larger Dolphin boats. With experienced instructors on board, students sailed further offshore and rotated through the three crew roles, allowing everyone to further develop their understanding of the responsibilities associated with different roles when sailing. Despite stronger winds and periods of rain, students demonstrated impressive resilience, flexibility and determination as they continued to develop their sailing skills. The students also began to explore the tactical side of sailing, working together and attempting to race against each other. Their ability to communicate, problem-solve and adapt to changing conditions highlighted the strong connection between the practical experience and the skills developed throughout their VET studies.

In the afternoon, students boarded speedboats to explore the local coastline and experience another perspective of conditions on the water. Along the way, they observed significant maritime landmarks, including the old power station, grain export terminal, shipping channels and the Spirit of Tasmania.

The evening provided an opportunity to relax and celebrate, with students enjoying a group dinner and reflecting on their two-year journey completing Certificate III in Sport, Aquatic and Recreation. The celebrations continued whilst watching the AFL final, playing card, singing karaoke and some entertaining stand-up comedy.

Day Three brought ideal sailing conditions, allowing students to return to the Envy boats and further develop their independent sailing skills. Students rotated through the roles of skipper, crew 1 and crew 2, giving everyone the opportunity to experience the different responsibilities involved in successfully operating a boat. The camp concluded with a competitive time trial, challenging students to bring together everything they had learnt. Success required more than simply sailing quickly, students had to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, adapt to changing conditions and problem-solve as a team. The competition was closely contested, with the winning boat completing the course in an impressive 1 minute and 40 seconds, crewed by Nathan as skipper, with Fletcher and Oscar as crew 1 and crew 2. Congratulations to the winning team!

The staff at the Victorian Sailing School were highly complimentary of our students, particularly praising their teamwork, dedication, flexibility and ability to quickly develop new skills.

The sailing camp was a fantastic culmination of two years of study and provided students with a memorable opportunity to take their theoretical knowledge out of the classroom and apply it in a real-world environment. Through sailing, climbing, group activities and challenging conditions, students demonstrated resilience, leadership, communication, teamwork and an ability to assess and respond to risk.
