Term Two in Grade 1

Welcome back to Term Two!

We trust that everyone had a relaxing and exciting break and is feeling refreshed and ready for the term ahead. This term we welcome Heather back to FWPS and to 1HP.

Literacy

Students will continue participating in the Little Learners Love Literacy Program, where they will develop skills in identifying sounds and syllables by blending and manipulating newly introduced decodable words each week. They will also learn to apply these words in their writing and spelling. During writing sessions, students will practise forming a variety of sentences, including statements and questions, using nouns, verbs, and adjectives to add detail and interest. They will further strengthen their understanding of correct sentence structure by consistently using capital letters, punctuation, and appropriate spacing between words. Students will also engage with texts that explore Indigenous perspectives and identify key themes and ideas.

Numeracy

We will continue using the Explicit Maths Program this term to support clear instruction, build strong foundations, and help every child feel confident in their learning. Students will engage in daily review activities to reinforce previously learned skills, supporting the development of confidence, fluency, and lasting understanding. During Term 2, students will build on their number knowledge by ordering two-digit numbers and developing strong subtraction skills using number bonds. They will explore place value, including making, reading and writing three-digit numbers, and deepen their understanding through problem-solving tasks. Students will also investigate measurement concepts such as length and capacity, and continue learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects. They will deepen their understanding of location by practising giving and following directional language.

Knowledge Unit

This term, students will develop their geographical understanding through learning how to read and use maps. They will explore how to navigate using simple directions, symbols and keys. Students will develop their ability to identify and locate the continents of the world, with a particular focus on Australia, including its states and key features. They will explore Australian animals and their habitats, and be introduced to First Nations Australians, including learning about the rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Students will broaden their global understanding by investigating the continents of Asia, Europe, Africa, North and South America, and Antarctica. Throughout these units, they will examine significant geographical features, countries, cities, and landmarks, strengthening their understanding of the world around them.

Respectful Relationships

Students will continue to explore Body Consent, Body Autonomy and identify problem solving strategies for social situations. Students will engage in a range of activities in order to develop positive coping skills, when faced with real life social and intrapersonal issues. Students will continue to work alongside the Berry Street Model through Welcome Circles, which will begin their day with positivity and a sense of belonging. Students will continue to use the ‘ready to learn scale’ to recognise when they are focussed and in the right mindset to learn, as well as using brain breaks to assist with their focus while learning.

We look forward to working with all students and families this term.

Kind regards,

The Grade One Team
