Year 6 News for Term 2

Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,

We have thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of Term 2 in Year 6 and are looking forward to the exciting weeks ahead. The Year 6 students have returned from the term break with a fantastic attitude towards their learning, along with a strong competitive spirit following the introduction of interschool sport.

Literacy Blocks

In Language Comprehension, our focus this term is the engaging novel Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson. This text will guide our Literacy Blocks as students explore new vocabulary, build background knowledge, and apply comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding of the novel.

As part of our writing curriculum, students will use the knowledge gained from our novel studies to create persuasive texts. Through the structured approach of The Writing Revolution, students will continue developing their understanding of different sentence types and how to construct them effectively. They will also explore the use of emotive language and its impact when writing persuasive texts for a specific audience.

During Spelling sessions, students will continue participating in the schoolwide program, Spelling Mastery. This carefully sequenced program is designed to build strong spelling skills through explicit teaching of spelling patterns, rules, and strategies.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students will continue learning through explicit teaching, with a focus on clear, step by step instruction and regular practice to build confidence and understanding. Daily Review sessions will continue to reinforce key skills and knowledge taught throughout the year.

Focus areas this term includes developing understanding of fractions and decimals, building multiplication and division fluency, and strengthening strategies for addition and subtraction. Students will also practise identifying and visualising patterns and understanding the rules connected to them. In Measurement, students will further develop their understanding of converting between common metric units and finding equivalence.

From Week 4, students across Years 5 and 6 will also participate in the Scaffolding Numeracy of the Middle Years program with a focus on developing their multiplicative thinking strategies in targeted teaching groups.

Units of Work

This term, our Humanities focus will be Geography, with an emphasis on natural hazards and disasters. Students will analyse the impact of hazards and disasters in Australia and explore significant geographical events from the past century.

Students will demonstrate their understanding through research tasks, detailed note taking, and poster presentations. These activities will encourage students to develop and apply their critical thinking skills.

Personal and Social Capabilities

Throughout the term, Year 6 students will participate in weekly Personal and Social Capability lessons incorporating programs such as Inform and Empower, Berry Street Education Model strategies, Consent Education, and Respectful Relationships. These sessions will focus on building students’ understanding of positive coping strategies, problem solving skills, emotional regulation, and stress management.

Our term value focus will also continue to be explored and discussed each day during Welcome Circles.
