Literacy

This week in Literacy, our Year 3 students have been building their **Tier 2 vocabulary** through reading and writing. As we read together, students have been locating new and interesting words in the text, discussing their meanings, and exploring how authors use precise vocabulary to make their writing more engaging. Students have then been applying these new words in their own writing to strengthen their ideas and develop more detailed, descriptive sentences.

Students have also been developing their research and planning skills by investigating a chosen topic and learning how to organise information effectively. They have practised identifying key ideas, summarising information in their own words, and recording important facts using dot points. These note-taking skills are helping students plan their information reports while building their understanding of key topic-specific vocabulary and the importance of selecting relevant information from their research.

Maths 

In Year 3 Maths, students have been learning and practising their multiplication and division skills through a variety of fun and engaging activities. We have also been introducing the UPSC problem-solving strategy (Understand, Plan, Solve and Check) to help students confidently tackle worded maths problems. Students are encouraged to carefully read each question, think about the best strategy to use, solve the problem, and then check that their answer makes sense. Using UPSC helps students become more independent problem solvers while building their confidence and mathematical thinking.

Students have also continued to develop their fact fluency through regular practice of number facts and daily review activities. These sessions help strengthen their recall of key maths facts while revisiting previously taught concepts to keep their learning fresh. It has been wonderful to see students become increasingly familiar with the expectations and routines during these activities, allowing them to work more independently, confidently and accurately each day. 

NAPLAN

We are incredibly proud of our Year 3 students for the positive attitude, resilience and determination they demonstrated throughout the NAPLAN assessments this year. Students approached each assessment with confidence, applied the strategies they have been learning in class, and persevered when tasks became challenging. Their calm and focused approach reflected the growth they have made as independent learners.

Most importantly, we celebrate the outstanding effort shown by every student. NAPLAN is just one opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning, and we are proud of the way they gave their personal best. We would also like to thank our families for their ongoing support and encouragement throughout the assessment period. Together, we continue to foster a positive learning environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves, celebrate their achievements, and strive for continued growth.
