Grade 2

Literacy

This week in Literacy, we learned to use prepositions with noun groups to describe where things are. We continued developing our comprehension by making inferences and practising reading fluency. In spelling, we explored the prefix re- meaning “again” and learned how c and g can make soft sounds before e, i and y. Students also practised tricky words such as minutes, great, these, remember, other and another.

Writing

This week in Writing, we are using The Stone Lion as our mentor text. Students are learning to identify and use possessive adjectives (such as my, your, his, her, our and their) to help identify who or what belongs to someone in different sentences. They are also learning to recognise and correctly use possessive pronouns (such as mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs) to show ownership in both speaking and writing.

As readers and writers, students are investigating the features of informative and narrative texts. Through our study of The Stone Lion, they are identifying key narrative elements, including characters, setting, problem and solution, and using these features to plan and write their own engaging stories. Students are also exploring informative texts to understand how facts are organised and presented clearly for the reader.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been learning about grouping and sharing as they explore multiplication and division. They have used arrays, bar models and repeated addition to represent and solve problems in different ways. Students have enjoyed using hands-on materials and visual strategies to develop their understanding of equal groups and how numbers can be shared fairly.
