Home Learning at Grayling Primary School

Last week, students began bringing home a weekly home learning sheet. Home learning is designed to consolidate classroom learning and provide students with an opportunity to independently practise familiar skills at home.

Home learning will be sent home each Monday and returned to school by Friday. It will include activities connected to Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Students will also continue to have access to relevant online learning platforms, including the MultiLit eLibrary and Maths Online.

Home learning is not compulsory, however, we encourage families to help their child establish a positive weekly routine. Tasks should be completed as independently as possible, as their purpose is to practise learning that has already been explicitly taught at school. Teachers will acknowledge and celebrate students who complete and return their home learning.

Prep to Year 2 students should continue to record their reading in their school diary. Students in Years 3 to 6 will receive a weekly reading log as part of their home learning. Regular reading remains one of the most valuable ways families can support learning at home.

Students will also bring home parent information pages that explain the purpose of home learning and provide practical guidance for supporting reading at home. These pages should be kept at home for future reference and will not be sent home each week.

Families can support home learning by:

Establishing a quiet and consistent time and place for learning
Encouraging their child to attempt tasks independently
Asking questions and showing interest without completing the work for them
Supporting regular reading and conversations about books
Letting the classroom teacher know if their child regularly finds the work too difficult or requires significant assistance

We understand that every family’s circumstances are different. Home learning should be a manageable and positive opportunity to reinforce classroom learning, not a source of stress.

Individual Education Plans and Student Support Group Meetings

Over the coming weeks, some families will receive an updated Individual Education Plan (IEP) for their child. Some families will also be contacted to book a Student Support Group (SSG) meeting; however, not every student with an IEP requires an SSG meeting.

An Individual Education Plan, commonly called an IEP, is a written plan that outlines a student’s strengths, individual learning needs, goals and the support or adjustments that will help them make progress. IEP goals are informed by classroom learning, assessments, observations and conversations with the student and their family.

If your child has an IEP, a copy will be sent to you through Compass. Families are encouraged to review the plan and contact their child’s classroom teacher if they have any questions, feedback or additional information to share.

A Student Support Group, or SSG, is a meeting held for students who require a coordinated approach to their learning, wellbeing or inclusion. It usually involves the student’s family, classroom teacher and other relevant school staff. Depending on the student’s needs, a member of the leadership team, Education Support staff or an external professional may also attend.

During an SSG meeting, families and staff may:

Discuss the student’s strengths, progress and current needs
Review their individual goals and supports
Share information about what is working at school and at home
Agree on adjustments, strategies and next steps
Ask questions or raise concerns

Families invited to attend an SSG meeting will receive a phone call from the school to book in a suitable time.

Families are important partners in supporting student learning and wellbeing. Your knowledge of your child helps us develop meaningful goals and provide consistent support across home and school.
