During this term, the MLA students have been exploring a range of significant Australian symbols. We looked closely at the history of the Australian flag and examined the meaning behind the Union Jack, the Southern Cross, and the seven pointed star. Students also investigated the Australian emblem, analysing the symbolism of the animals, plants, and imagery within the shield.

In addition, we studied the symbols used throughout the Winter Olympic Games. Students explored the flags and uniforms of various countries and discussed how these visual elements represent cultural identity.

To extend this learning, students followed the design process to create their own Australian mascot, as well as a personal symbol that reflects their identity and culture. Applying their understanding of how images communicate meaning has enabled them to design some truly thoughtful and creative pieces.
