News from the Art Department

Lino Prints

Year 8 students are currently bringing their creativity to life through lino self-portraits. Using the grid method, the boys have been learning how to carefully draw the proportions of a face while developing their observational drawing skills. Each student has also designed a background that reflects something meaningful about their personality, interests or experiences.

After completing their drawings, the designs were transferred onto lino blocks. The class is now enjoying the hands-on process of carving their images and beginning the exciting stage of printing. It has been fantastic to see the students’ creativity and individuality come through in their work, and we look forward to seeing the final prints displayed.

Looking Inwards

Years 11 and 12 Visual Art in Practice students are currently developing their experimental artworks for the A1 Unit: Looking Inwards. This unit encourages students to explore their personal identity through art while experimenting with a range of techniques and media.

Throughout the unit, the boys are trialling different artistic processes and materials to discover new ways of expressing their ideas and perspectives. By reflecting on their own experiences, interests and personalities, students are creating meaningful artworks that offer a unique insight into who they are as individuals. It has been exciting to see their creativity and confidence grow as they explore new approaches and develop their artistic voice.

Prints, Programs & Exhibitions

Year 10 Visual Art students have completed their multi-layered propaganda portrait prints, with outstanding results.

Next week, three of our students will attend a fully funded Design Tracks program run by QAGOMA Learning. Design Tracks is a multi-day art education program for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and South Sea Islander students. Participants will learn from a range of mentors through art talks and workshops held at Cairns Art Gallery, NorthSite Art Gallery, and NorthSite Art Studios. We are very appreciative of this opportunity for our young men.

In other exciting news, Fischer Richards (Year 10), along with Thomas King and Rhys Spralja (Year 11), have been selected to participate in the Receive>Respond exhibition. The exhibition opens on Friday 30 May and runs until 22 June at The Tanks Art Centre. Receive>Respond is a collaborative exhibition in which selected students are paired with students or young creatives from other schools and respond to one another’s artworks by creating a new work in the medium of their choice.
