We are proud to commend Sam Kelly, in Year 9, on an outstanding achievement in science. Sam was recently selected to enter the prestigious Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) iCubed Awards, a national competition celebrating excellence in scientific inquiry among Australian students.
His entry, a scientific investigation into water filtration methods, demonstrated strong scientific thinking, careful experimentation and real-world relevance. Competing against 7,000 entries from across Australia, his project was recognised in the top 100 submissions nationwide –a remarkable result at a national level.

This achievement reflects not only his dedication and curiosity, but also a high level of skill in applying the scientific method to solve meaningful problems. Reaching the top 100 is an exceptional accomplishment and places him among some of the most promising young scientists in the country.
Congratulations Sam on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to seeing where your passion for science leads next.
Lucas Wilsch, in Year 11, competed in the National Regimental Sergeant Major – Army Drill Competition (RSM-A) over the Easter weekend in Canberra. Lucas was the only army cadet from Cairns/Atherton to be chosen, and he was part of a team of eight with fellow NQ Regiment cadets from Townsville, Mt Isa and Mackay to compete against other regiments from all over Australia.
The competition consisted of a catafalque service, a parade-ground drill procedure and a dress inspection.
Lucas’s regiment won Gold and he was also awarded a prestigious Challenge Coin from the NQ Regimental Sergeant Major of Army.

Franky Baker has been selected in the U18 Australian Men's Hockey team for an upcoming tour of India from 10–21 May. While this is not the final team for the World Championships, selection in this squad is a significant milestone and an important step towards future national representation at that level. Well done, Franky.
