Introducing Copilot 13+

“Change has never been this fast and will never be this slow again”

This quote, often attributed to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, is one we have considered at length at St Augustine’s. It reminds us that our world is changing rapidly, particularly in the IT space. AI is on the rise, and as a result we have to be sure that we have a clear direction and are leaders in this space. We also need to be sure that we implement change carefully, giving full consideration to its impact on teachers, other staff and parents.

Our direction includes a focus on soft skills, which are increasing in value and will "future proof" our students. Skills that involve critical thinking, relational and intrapersonal skills, being able to collaborate, discuss and problem solve. Finding a balance between developing these skills and using technologies is at the forefront of our pedagogy.

With this in mind, we will be implementing Copilot13+ as a trial AI assistant available to our staff and students beginning in Term 3. This decision has been made after careful consideration of the opportunities and responsibilities associated with emerging technologies. Our primary reasons for introducing Copilot13+ include:

  • Data security: Maintains strong data privacy and security protections for students.
  • Education-specific design: The platform is tailored for learning, supporting curriculum-aligned and age-appropriate use.
  • Preparation for the future: AI is an increasingly important part of modern life; guided exposure supports digital literacy and ethical understanding.
  • Learning support: Copilot 13+ can assist with drafting, concept clarification, and timely feedback, complementing teacher instruction.
  • Equity of access: Ensures equitable access for all students to the same learning tool.

To support a responsible and well-managed rollout, the College will provide structured learning and professional development across the school:

  • Staff training: All teaching staff will participate in AI literacy professional development during this term's pupil-free day in Week 6, focusing on safe, effective and pedagogically sound use.

  • Student learning: Students will complete an AI literacy program this term through pastoral care, covering safe use, critical evaluation and ethical considerations.

  • Parent information: A parent webinar will be held in Week 8 this term to provide an overview of Copilot 13+, including guidance for supporting students at home.

Copilot 13+ will be introduced with clear expectations, ongoing monitoring and staff oversight to ensure its use aligns with college guidelines and supports student learning and wellbeing. I acknowledge the work of our Head of Pedagogy and Innovation Mrs Michelle Peut in supporting the development and implementation of this initiative.
