Dear Sunbury College community,
I want to share my appreciation to all students who nominated for leadership positions for the 2025 school year. It takes great endeavor and courage to put your name forward when the outcome is uncertain. Congratulations to Ayisha and Austyn who were elected our school captains and to Athena and Shreya on being elected as school vice-captains. I am looking forward to each of you continuing your contribution to our school community in these roles next year.
I was recently fortunate to be invited with a small group of Sunbury community members to attend a tour of the new Parkville metro station with Josh Bull MP. This was the first time community members in Victoria were invited to take a tour of one of the new stations. I was able to take two or our STEM Enhancement students, Sammi and Thomas from Year 7, who had a tour with Josh and heard from Metro Tunnel engineers on several design aspects of the new station.
When our Year 12 students are deciding on their next steps after they graduate, one key factor in the decision making for many of them is which university is accessibile from Sunbury. One of the key advantages for the young people of Sunbury and Diggers Rest in the construction of the new metro tunnel, is by the middle of next year they will be able to catch a train from Sunbury station directly to Parkville station, which is located at the front gate of The University of Melbourne. Monash University will also be far easier to get to from Sunbury, with the Sunbury line connecting directly to the Cranbourne line and going past both Monash University campuses at Caulfield East and Clayton. This will save Sunbury young people many hours per week when travelling to and from these campuses.
With both universities having strong engineering programs, it is hopeful that many of Ms. Besic’s twenty-six very talented Year 7 STEM Enhancement students will consider an engineering program at The University of Melbourne or Monash University in five years’ time.
Best wishes
