Duke of Edinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous journeys.
The 2024 Bronze cohort finished their final section earlier this term with some very enjoyable days spent on camp.
The Practice camp had the group walk the Surf Coast Walk across two days. During the walk up Split Point, many of the group recognised the lighthouse from iconic Australian TV show 'Round the Twist'. This first walk was eye opening for the students with the weight of their bags - some of this self inflicted with extra lollies and even cakes. Some definitely had packed the kitchen sink and some the bare minimum.
We arrived at the camp and experienced an outstanding camp kitchen where all the meals were prepped, cooked, and eaten in beautiful surroundings.
Day 2 started early and the group managed to leave camp ahead of schedule. The walk then meandered along the coast to Southside beach.
The students reviewed their successes and failings before their qualifying adventurous journey a week later. Some blisters not quite healed made for some difficult walking. After a long bus journey to Timboon many enjoyed the ice cream before the walk commenced. The group then walked the 12 Apostles trail and passed through some wonderful scenery. The eagle eyed members of the group spotted koalas along the route and spent some time photographing them. The group then descended into Port Campbell to set up camp and again prepare their meals.
That evening, and back on to the bus, we travelled to London Bridge in order to try to witness the penguins arrive. Thankfully, we had success and saw many penguins come back on land at the end of the day.
Day 2 saw the group walk from Princetown to the 12 Apostles: an 8km beautiful coast path walk to one of Australia’s iconic landmarks. Knowing that this was their final leg of the journey was inspiring and a big motivating factor for the students. Once back at the bus, we loaded the bags and returned to the viewing platforms to get some individual and group photos with the 12 Apostles in the background.
Two very successful camps to pass the Adventurous Journey section and more importantly complete the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
Many congratulations to all those involved.
