Chinatown and the Chinese Museum

On Monday, 27 July, two Year 7 Chinese classes enjoyed an exciting excursion to Melbourne’s Chinatown and the Chinese Museum, led by Sabrina Zhu, Tammy Baines and Annie Liu.

Students explored the museum through an engaging guided tour, where they sat together to listen as the museum educator shared stories about the Han Dynasty, the Terracotta Warriors, and the history of Chinese migration during the Australian gold rush. They also admired the museum’s famous Millennium Dragon, learning about its importance in Chinese culture and community celebrations.

A highlight of this year’s excursion was a one-hour Chinese Knot-making workshop. Students discovered the meaning behind this traditional craft, symbolising good luck and prosperity, and enjoyed creating their own Chinese knots to take home.

After the museum visit, everyone walked to the Melbourne Central Food Court for lunch before travelling back to school on Route 86 tram, arriving at approximately 3:00 pm.

The excursion provided students with a valuable opportunity to experience Chinese history and culture beyond the classroom. We are proud of their excellent behaviour, curiosity, and enthusiastic participation throughout the day, making it a memorable learning experience for everyone.
