Gardening Class: Seeds of Change and a Winter Garden Makeover:

Another week, another wet Wednesday! Thankfully, the rain didn’t stop us from having fun in the garden classroom.

This week, we explored the National Science Week theme, 'Seeds of Change,' by learning about seed aviation and biomimicry. Students discovered that some trees have evolved clever ways to help their seeds travel. Some seeds have wings, others glide through the air and some even float down like tiny parachutes!

Inspired by nature, students became inventors and designed their very own flying seeds using just paper, a corn seed and tape. There were lots of creative ideas, and it was wonderful to see everyone testing, changing and improving their designs to see which ones could fly the furthest. What a great way to learn how nature can inspire science and engineering!

Thankfully, the rain cleared on Thursday, allowing us to get some much-needed garden maintenance done in our kitchen garden. There is an old saying that “great summer gardens are created in winter,” and we certainly made a good start! Students helped clear weeds and remove old plants from the garden beds, getting them ready for fresh compost and cow manure arriving next week.

It’s wonderful to see our garden taking shape as we prepare for another season of growing, learning and harvesting.
