Foundation

Our Foundation scientists have been getting to know the fascinating waterbugs that live in and around our pond! Students watched a Melbourne Water video to learn how to identify different waterbugs and how these tiny creatures can tell us about the health and water quality of a pond. They then chose a waterbug to carefully observe and draw. This week, their learning came to life as they got hands-on with water from our very own pond!

Students discovered many of the creatures they had met previously, including our native Dwarf Galaxias, damselfly larvae, aquatic snails and bloodworms. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they investigated the amazing little creatures living right on our doorstep!

Year 1 & 2

Year 1/2 students brought together their learning from the past few weeks in a creative Nature-Inspired Playground Design Challenge. Students drew on what they had learned about building tall, stable structures and strong bridges, while also exploring how engineers and designers can look to nature for inspiration. They used these ideas to create imaginative playground designs, transforming features such as tree branches, leaves, rocks and flowers into climbing frames, shade structures, bridges and play spaces.

Students then shared their designs with their classmates, explaining how nature had inspired their ideas and how their playgrounds would work. It was wonderful to see their scientific knowledge, engineering skills and imaginations come together!
