Shakespeare's Birthday Quiz

As part of World Book Day, we celebrated Shakespeare's birthday (23rd of Apil) with a week of fun!

Students tested their literary chops with a "Who said it?" quiz featuring lyrics from Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and of course, the Bard himself. Plus, a "Hip Hop or Shakespeare?" challenge had them guessing the source of famous quotes.

It was a blast! Stay tuned for more exciting events at the LRC.

Anzac Day

ANZAC Day, on April 25th, is a National Day of Remembrance in Melbourne (and all of Australia) to honour veterans and fallen soldiers. It marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in WWI, where ANZAC forces (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps) showed immense courage. Melbourne holds some of the country's largest commemorations, with a moving dawn service and city-wide events. Our community pulled together to assist with creating a great display for Anzac Day, with thanks for their contributions to Mr Brown, Mr Webster, Mr Pattison, Miss Vance and staff in the LRC.

Jazzing Up the LRC!

To celebrate International Jazz Day on April 30th, the LRC transformed into a mini music venue! We were thrilled to host our talented music students from year 7 to 10 who treated us to a fantastic lunchtime performance featuring retro tunes, the play list: Where is my Mind, by The Pixies, Brain Stew by Green Day and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

Well done to the students who performed!

This event was a perfect example of how the LRC goes beyond books. It's a space for learning, for community, and for celebrating the arts!

International Harry Potter Day

International Harry Potter Day is celebrated on May 2nd every year. It's a day for fans, also known as "Potterheads," to come together and celebrate the magical world created by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter book series.

Here's why May 2nd was chosen:

The Battle of Hogwarts: According to the timeline in the books, the epic Battle of Hogwarts, where Harry Potter defeats Lord Voldemort, took place on May 2nd. So, it's a fitting day to celebrate the triumph of good over evil! At the LRC, we have the full collection of Harry Potter for you to read or watch on Clickview or DVD!

Whether you're a lifelong Potterhead or just discovering the magic for the first time, International Harry Potter Day is a great opportunity to celebrate this beloved literary and film series.

Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day, also known as "May the 4th Be With You" day, is a day celebrated by fans of the Star Wars franchise on May 4th every year. It's a fun and playful way to honour the iconic sci-fi saga created by George Lucas.

Here's the origin story behind the playful name:

The Punning Phrase: The date, May the 4th, sounds very similar to the famous Star Wars Jedi saying, "May the Force be with you." This clever wordplay is what sparked the unofficial holiday. While not an official designation, fans have embraced the date and turned it into a day of celebration.

Calling all bookworms! Get ready for a National Story Adventure!

Every year libraries, schools, and homes across Australia come together for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on the 22nd of May.

This exciting event features an Australian children's book, this year’s book Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, is read aloud at the same time by thousands of kids!

It's a fun and colourful way to celebrate the magic of reading, spark imaginations and explore important themes. So, grab Bowerbird Blues and get ready to dive into a captivating story!

Education Week

Don't miss Education Week in Victoria, happening May 13th to 17th, 2024!

This annual celebration shines a light on the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in our lives. Throughout the week, students, parents, teachers, and the whole school community are encouraged to come together and celebrate the power of STEM in education.

This year's theme, "Spotlight on STEM," is a chance to explore the endless possibilities these fields hold. Mark your calendars and get ready to learn, share ideas, and discover how STEM shapes our world!

National Reconciliation Week: Now More Than Ever

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared history, cultures, and achievements. It's also a chance to explore how we can each contribute to achieving reconciliation. The 2024 theme, "Now More Than Ever," reminds us that the fight for justice and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continues.

NRW is held annually from May 27th to June 3rd. These dates mark two significant milestones: the successful 1967 referendum and the Mabo decision. Reconciliation requires ongoing action from all Australians. We can build stronger relationships and communities by valuing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures, and futures.

Happy Birthday Eoin Colfer

Eoin Colfer is an award-winning Irish author best known for his fantasy series, Artemis Fowl. Here's a quick rundown on his background and achievements:

Irish Roots: Born in Wexford, Ireland, on May 14th 1965, Eoin Colfer initially pursued a career in education, becoming a primary school teacher.
From Teacher to Author: After spending time living and working abroad in places like Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Italy, he found inspiration to write. His first novel, Benny and Omar, was published in 1998.
Artemis Fowl Takes Flight: In 2001, Colfer's breakout success came with the publication of Artemis Fowl, the first book in a series featuring a cunning young criminal mastermind and his fantastical adventures involving fairies and leprechauns. The series became a global phenomenon, translated into over 40 languages.
Beyond Artemis Fowl: Colfer's writing isn't limited to fantasy. He has penned a variety of other successful books, including humorous novels like the Benny and Omar series, as well as works aimed at young adults like the Artemis Fowl spin-off series, Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex.
Awarded Author: Colfer's contributions to children's literature have been recognized with numerous awards. Notably, he was commissioned to write the sixth instalment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series and has served as Ireland's Children's Laureate.
