Melbourne Magistrates Court Excursion

On Tuesday 16th April students from Mrs Graham’s Crime and Politics elective (Years 9 and 10) attended an excursion to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. It was an eye-opening experience from the very start of the day with students and staff having to go through security (exactly like at the airport) upon entering the building, alongside legal workers, Police Officers and those accused of various matters.

Once inside we saw various criminal matters dealt with by various Magistrates including traffic offences, unpaid fines and theft. Students were surprised by how quickly some matters were dealt with, how many matters were adjourned for various reasons, how many matters each Magistrate could deal with in a short amount of time (and the variety of those matters) and how small the court rooms were. Students were able to talk to Police Officers and Magistrates in between cases and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
