Term 3!

Literacy

Grade 2 students have started their unit on persuasive writing and are learning to use the OREO model to scaffold their pieces. Students decide on their opinion, state their opinion and then give 3 reasons and examples to support their opinion. They then summarise by stating their opinion once more. It is lovely to see students think aloud about how they think and feel about a topic, work through the reasons why they think or feel that way and then support their ideas with a concrete example. As we work through the unit they will practise using the OREO model to make sure they include all the elements of persuasive text and then progress to including emotion, humour and strong language to enhance their writing.

Grade 1's have stepped back into Initial Lit and all our Literacy routines. They have been learning all about the bossy e that makes the vowels say their long sounds. The students are then making the connection from reading the words to then spelling them correctly in their own writing. Some of the students have had a go, at writing their own stories that we are typing up and then they can illustrate and share. We are moving into some persuasive writing next week so you may find that your child wants to convince you about an idea that they have and then you may have to work on your own persuasive responses.

Numeracy

In Maths we have been working on multiplication. Students have practised demonstrating multiplication using arrays, repeated addition, number lines, groups of and worded problems. By practising all of these skills they are able to deepen their understanding of number and the four operations and show their understanding through the use of hands on materials and modelling. Below are some multiplication think boards that they have used to proudly display the skills they have been learning.

In Numeracy we have been working on Place Value and the way that numbers are put together with ones, tens and hundreds. We are moving into some multiplication, counting groups of things and then making arrays to show the information in a different way.

Athletics Day

A much anticipated event for the Grade 1's and 2's this week, was our annual athletics day. Now that they know what it is all about, the event is met with excitement and a keen sense of competitiveness and sportsmanship. All Grade 1 and 2 students had the opportunity to participate in shot put, discus and long jump and were keen to show their skills on the track that they had been practising at school. They also ran 70m with the more senior students cheering them on and those that were up for the challenge were invited to run a 200m race. Congratulations to everyone who participated - we were so proud to see you all having a go and most of all having fun and supporting each other!
