Learning in Year 6

Our Year 6 students have had a busy and productive few weeks of learning across all curriculum areas.

In English, students are thoroughly enjoying our class novel study of ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. We are especially excited that Morris Gleitzman will be visiting our school in August, providing students with a wonderful opportunity to connect with an acclaimed Australian author. As part of our Professional Learning Community (PLC) focus, students have been learning to identify and use contractions in both their extended and contracted forms. They have applied this knowledge to their writing while analysing, interpreting and evaluating chapter responses.

In Writing, students have been creating Immigration Narratives, exploring the push and pull factors that influence a person's decision to leave their homeland. Through this unit, students have demonstrated empathy and understanding as they developed realistic stories about individuals moving to a new country, often without family connections and with limited understanding of the language and culture.

In Mathematics, students have been investigating probability and learning to express outcomes as fractions, decimals and percentages. Building on this understanding, they have been developing their skills in adding and subtracting decimals, culminating in the highly engaging Mission to Mars project, where students applied their mathematical knowledge in a real-world context.

As part of our Integrated Studies unit, students participated in an engaging hands-on incursion focused on immigration. The experience deepened their understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by migrants and refugees and complemented their classroom learning.

Our Buddy sessions continue to be a highlight of the week. Students have been working collaboratively with their buddies, sharing ideas, building relationships and engaging in rich conversations through a variety of enjoyable activities.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and maturity our Year 6 students continue to demonstrate in their learning and look forward to sharing more of their achievements next term.
