Learning in Year 1

After a jam-packed term full of learning, growth and exciting experiences, we are nearly there! We are incredibly proud of the students and all they have achieved throughout Semester 1. It is hard to believe we are already approaching the halfway point of the year!
Important Dates
Friday June 26th: Last day of Term 2 – 2:30pm finish
Friday June 26th: Reports available on Compass
Literacy
In Writing, we finished the term by looking at some simple poetry. It has been a wonderful way to engage students while allowing them to be creative and have fun with language. We have explored how our five senses can help us create more in depth descriptions and have experimented with different types of poems, including colour poems and acrostic poems.
During our daily Reading and Literacy Appreciation sessions, students have been taking a deep dive into new vocabulary, exploring the author’s purpose and developing a range of reading strategies to support their comprehension. Furthermore, we have been working on our fluency when reading aloud. This includes trying to add expression, automaticity (knowing the words we are reading), having a nice rhythm to our reading (using punctuation) and smoothness.
Mathematics
Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring addition and subtraction. Students have investigated different strategies for solving equations, including using concrete materials (like counters and blocks), number lines, ten frames and developing quick recall strategies.
We have also been learning about time. Students have explored the features of clocks and have practised reading time to the hour. We discussed different periods of time, including days, months and years.
Integrated Studies
To wrap up our Integrated Studies learning for the term, students have been designing and creating their own community called ‘Heathmontville’. Each student has contributed to the community by creating a triarama representing a different part of the city, such as a park, sporting field, hospital or vet. These creations look amazing, and students have loved using their imagination and creativity to bring their community to life.
Wellbeing
During our weekly Wellbeing sessions, we have been exploring positive coping strategies. Students have discussed ways to support themselves and others, including taking turns, cheering others up, calming down and managing feelings when they are upset or angry. Students have enjoyed developing these skills through role plays, games and class discussions, followed by reflecting on their learning.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the term. We hope everyone has a safe and relaxing winter break and we look forward to welcoming students back for another exciting term of learning in Term 3.
