Learning in Year 3

Literacy

What an adventure we have had this term as we finished our class novel, The Nothing to See Here Hotel. From mythical creatures and mischievous Barrow Goblins taking over the hotel to a ship full of pirate goblins arriving just in time to save the day, the story kept us entertained from beginning to end. Along the way, we practised a range of reading comprehension strategies, including predicting, making connections, visualising and summarising. We thoroughly enjoyed delving into this exciting novel and are already looking forward to reading the next book in the series next term. We hope you enjoy the sumamry pop up books that have been coming home.

We have also been focusing on summary writing while learning about the states and territories of Australia. Using informative videos and other sources, students identified key information and practised rewriting it in their own words. They have proudly displayed their learning on colourful Australia maps, which will soon be on display in our classrooms. We can't wait for you to see them!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have revisited addition and subtraction concepts, strengthening our understanding through a variety of problem-solving strategies. Students have practised solving vertical equations, using number lines and partitioning numbers to support their thinking. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as they explain and apply different strategies to solve mathematical problems.

We have just begun our Mathematics unit on collecting and representing data. We have been exploring different types of graphs and discussing when each graph is most useful for displaying information.Students are now beginning to collect their own real-life data and represent their findings using bar graphs. They have been developing their skills in organising information, interpreting data, and presenting their results clearly. We look forward to continuing our investigations and discovering what our data can tell us!

Reconciliation Week

A big thank you to Mr Warren Smith for organising a range of meaningful activities for the whole school during National Reconciliation Week. Our class enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. We went "all in" by creating Indigenous-inspired friendship bracelets and discussing the importance of acknowledging, respecting and learning from First Nations peoples. It was a valuable week of reflection, learning and celebration.

National Vegemite Day

On 16th June, the Year 3 students celebrated National Vegemite Day by learning all about one of Australia's most iconic foods. Students explored the history of Vegemite, listened to the famous Vegemite song, and even enjoyed a taste test with Salada biscuits while they worked.  The students were fascinated to discover some surprising facts about Vegemite. Did you know that Vegemite has a higher salt content than seawater?

Year 3 Camp

Excitement is building as our Year 3 Camp approaches at the end of Term 3!

To help families prepare, we have scheduled a Parent Information Night via Zoom on Tuesday 23 June at 6:00pm. During the session, we will provide an overview of the camp facilities, activities, proposed menu and packing requirements, as well as answer any questions you may have.

If you are unable to attend the online meeting, don't worry. The presentation slides will be shared with families afterwards, along with any additional information. Medical forms and other important camp documentation will also be sent home shortly.

We are looking forward to sharing the excitement of camp with our students and families and helping everyone feel prepared for what promises to be a fantastic experience.
