This fortnight in Mathematics, we have continued to deepen our understanding of place value. Students have been practising renaming numbers in different ways using place value knowledge. For example, the number 245 can be represented as 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 5 ones (standard form), or as 2 hundreds and 45 ones (non-standard form). To support their learning, students have used number expanders, MAB blocks and place value mats to model and explore numbers in a variety of ways.

Students have also been identifying, reading and ordering numbers to 10,000. Additionally, we have extended our understanding of place value to include decimals and explored their relationship to fractions. As we journeyed beyond whole numbers, students began to discover the world of tenths and hundredths, noticing the patterns and relationships that weave together decimals, fractions and money. Through hands-on exploration and observation, they developed a deeper appreciation for how numbers can be represented in many forms while still expressing the same underlying value.

This week, we began our Pom Pom Jar initiative! Students will work together to fill the jars with pom poms as they demonstrate our shared class values and expectations. As a class, students collaborated to brainstorm possible rewards and then participated in a vote to select their top three prize options. These will become our three jars.

Together, we also created a list of "Great Expectations", positive behaviours and habits that we can work towards as a class to earn pom poms. Each time a pom pom is added to a jar, the student who earned it will have the opportunity to cast a vote for their preferred class reward. This system encourages both individual responsibility and collective effort, as every contribution will help us move closer to a shared goal.
