FAB FABRICS || Our Year 9 & 10 Fab Fabrics students are diving into the world of ethical design with the Friendship Cushion Project! This hands-on specialism is a fantastic introduction to VCE Product Design Technologies, where creativity meets sustainability.

Throughout the unit, students are:

• Strengthening their hand and machine sewing skills
• Exploring upcycling techniques
• Adding personal flair through embellishment
• Designing and producing meaningful textile products for real end users

These cushions are not just soft — they are smart, sustainable and sewn with purpose.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS EVENT || Today, our Year 9, 11 and 12 students showcased their diplomacy and negotiation skills at the Model UN event hosted by Dromana Secondary College! In this creative simulation of the UN General Assembly, students represented various Member States of the UN. Working in teams, they stepped into the shoes of country ambassadors, advocating for their nations' perspectives on global issues. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to hone their debate skills and deepen their understanding of international relations.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK ACTIVITIES || As part of National Science Week (9 – 17 August), the BEST team hosted a fun Science Trivia at lunchtime yesterday, with prizes and House points up for grabs! On Tuesday, Dr Carolien van de Sandt, NHMRC EL2 Investigator Senior Research Fellow from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Melbourne, spoke to our Year 11 and 12 Biology students about her groundbreaking research on Influenza, and her pathway to becoming a researcher. Ashleigh Hayes, a Research Assistant from The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, joined us today to share insights on her work with Staphylococcus aureus. She discussed how she modifies its DNA to test antibiotic resistance. Our students were inspired by their expertise and passion for microbiology and genetic research.

FOOD HANDLERS CERTIFICATE || Today, our Year 9-12 students completed the essential Food Handlers Certificate, a must-have for anyone seeking flexible work in the hospitality and events industries! This certification ensures students are equipped with the knowledge to safely handle food in accordance with legal requirements. They covered key topics like food safety, preventing cross-contamination, time and temperature controls and more. Congratulations to all participants for gaining this valuable skill!

GETTING MOVING WITH STRONG PILATES || Today, our Year 11 PE students took part in a fun and engaging session combining strength and cardio-based activities. Not only did they challenge themselves physically, but they also experienced firsthand how meeting the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines can boost fitness, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

A WEEK OF AUSSIE CULTURE WITH OUR JAPANESE EXCHANGE STUDENTS || Our Japanese Exchange students have had an action-packed week exploring Australian culture! They’ve tried their hand at Australian cultural art, participated in a footy session, and even cooked up some Aussie favourites.

BREWING SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE || Year 9-12 students took part in a hands-on barista course today as part of our Micro-credentials Program. They learned key skills in espresso preparation, milk texturing, and coffee machine operation, preparing them for careers and work opportunities in hospitality!

JAPANESE EXCHANGE - FAREWELL & HEALESVILLE SANCTUARY VISIT || On their final day, our Japanese Exchange students got up close with Australia’s wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary before their farewell. Wonderful connections and friendships were formed, and our students can’t wait to visit Japan in 2026!

KOKODA 2025 TRAINING || Our 2025 Kokoda team completed a wonderful hike at Arthur’s Seat State Park this morning. They received some great packing advice from their brilliant guide Darcy and were delighted to be joined by Beaumaris SC alumna Emma, who shared some great tips from her time on the track in 2023.
