Unit 3/4 Visual Communication Design

The Unit 3/4 Visual Communication Design class is currently working on their final major design assessment. Students have chosen a human-centred problem, using visual communication design to come up with a viable solution for their chosen problem. Students have been working very hard on their design projects throughout the past few months to make sure that they can be proud of their work.
Here are some testimonials from students currently undertaking Visual Communication Design:
This year in Vis Com has proven to be one of the most challenging things I have ever done. Despite being a portfolio subject, the complexities and workload make it harder than the intense STEM subjects offered by the VM stream. Although very intense as a subject, working with Mr Pablo has made it so much more bearable and enjoyable. This year we have been creating and making our own designs in two separate design fields. It’s been almost entirely student-led project work allowing for flexibility in our workload. Although highly competitive, collaborating and getting peer feedback is the foundation of all of our projects. As someone who wouldn’t be considered an art student, I have learnt and developed skills that were not in the realm of possibilities before, and have pushed and challenged myself to be a better designer and student, as doing a folio subject required different self-management skills that you wouldn’t get from any other subject.

Recently in Visual Communication Design, my peers and I have been working on our SATs (School Assessed Tasks). This looks different for every student in this subject. For example, I have been working on an environmental design, which is an animal therapy clinic, as well as designing a logo and advertisement for this clinic. Personally, I enjoy the freedom aspect when it comes to this subject. I am able to pull from my non-design related interests and incorporate them in a design project. This allows me to remain invested and passionate in the work I am completing. However, the workload is a lot and it can all be very time-consuming and stressful. There is some flexibility around how you complete the work, which allows for individual differences.

This year I am in Vis Com Units 3 and 4 and although it is an art-design subject, I have faced many challenges in doing this class. From the back-to-back assessments and managing my time with completing my portfolio and other classes, I have been exhausted trying to keep up. However, despite all of this I still enjoy the class, the freedom of creating my own work is rewarding, and looking over my folio, I am only reminded of the hard work I put into the class. Although I spend my nights up late completing all my work, the class really helped me explore my creativity and my creative freedom. If asked to recommend this class to anyone, I would first warn people about the immense workload as it gets hard to find a balance between work and relaxation alongside the challenging written assessments we have to write. However, it is really worth highlighting how fun it is to complete a long-term project of your own choice alongside getting to experiment with things you never thought of doing before. All in all the year has been quite tough, but all the more rewarding.
