Science Week

On Friday the 14th of August, our Year 5/6 shared our Science Week learning with the school community.

The Science Week focus for 2026 was SEEDS OF SCIENCE. Celebrated durng the International Year of the female farmer !

Students investigated the germination and growth of seeds as well as observing different types of seeds including indigenous spear grass seed and she-oak seeds.

Throughout the investigation students were able to observe the conditions required for different seeds to germinate. Student noticed the differing rates of germination and the effect of variables such as light, water and temperature on the rate of germination. They had the opportunity to 'disect' their germinated seeds to closely observe the growth of the roots and the changes in the seed as it begins to grow.

Students also performed an observation of how variables such as light, water, sugar and salt affected the growth of 4 of the same seeds. Students created their own investigations and shared their results noting similarities and differences with other similar experiments.

Many students have become quite attached to their plants and continue to nurture them on a daily basis. While we are expecting some plants to die (given the variables) we do hope to support students to continue to observe the growth of their seedlings either at school or at home.

Sharing our learning during the SCIENCE WEEK display was a valuable opportunity for students to  communicate their enthusiasm for Science. The level of engagement and dedication to the learning has been exceptional. We look forward to providing more opportunities to support students with similar authentic and meaningful learning in Science.

A special thank you to Jayden from 5KC who provided all the egg cartons for the experiments.

Moving into the Teen Years Program

As part of our focus on student wellbeing and respectful relationships, Team 5/6 students have been participating in the Interrelate: Moving into the Teen Years program. This program supports students as they begin to navigate the transition into adolescence, exploring topics such as relationships, identity, emotions, change and respectful communication in a safe and supportive environment.

The program will take place on:

  • Thursday 6 August
  • Thursday 13 August
  • Thursday 20 August

Home Learning

A friendly reminder that each week, students are expected to complete the following:

Nightly Reading: 20 - 30 minutes each night, choosing a mix of fiction and non-fiction texts that interest them

Weekly SMART Spelling: practise their spelling words each night using a Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check process. Additional activities are also provided in students' Home Learning books to further reinforce spelling skills and word knowledge.

Mathematics Grid: complete one task from the Mathematics Grid each week. Parents sign once the task is completed.

For students who are still developing recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10, regular practice at home is strongly encouraged.

Optional Online Tasks: Optional My Numeracy and My Literacy tasks are available through Essential Assessment for students to explore online.

Students are to bring their Home Learning Book and School Diary to and from school each day.
