Parent Corner: Student motivation and support

At BPPS, we know that every child learns differently. Some children need extra help to understand a new idea, while others are ready to be challenged further. Our teachers are working to make sure every child receives the right level of support and challenge.

Extra support when children need it

Teachers regularly check how students are going with their learning. If a child is finding something difficult, teachers can provide extra explanation, examples, practice or support.

Teachers may:

  • Explain something in a different way.
  • Work with a small group of students who need similar support.
  • Give students extra practice.
  • Use pictures, examples or hands-on activities to help explain an idea.
  • Check in with students regularly to make sure they understand.

This means we can identify when a child needs additional help and respond as part of their everyday learning.

Keeping children interested and motivated

We also want children to be interested in what they are learning. Our teachers are working on making lessons engaging, purposeful and suited to the needs of their students.

We are encouraging teachers to:

  • Give students clear learning goals.
  • Check that students understand what they are learning.
  • Provide opportunities for students to ask questions and share their thinking.
  • Use feedback to help children understand how they are going and what to do next.
  • Adjust lessons when students need more help or are ready to move ahead.

Making sure every child is challenged

We want every student to experience success, but success does not always mean doing the same work as everyone else.

Our teachers are working to make sure learning is at the right level for each individual child. This means providing additional support when a student needs it, while also making learning more challenging when a student is ready to extend their thinking.

We are continuing to improve our teaching programs and expectations so that students have the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make strong progress. Our teachers are using student learning information to help decide what each child needs to learn next.

Our goal

Our goal is simple:

Every child should feel supported, interested and appropriately challenged in their learning.

We will continue to work with our teachers, students and families to make sure learning at BPPS helps every child grow, achieve and feel proud of their progress.
