World Cup fever has finally arrived.

St Peter’s students are often see in  the sports section of the library where they are likely to choose a book about soccer or football as it is known outside of Australia. One popular series is ‘Ultimate Football Heroes’ highlighting legends of the game.

One such hero is ‘Ronaldo’ which sets out to explore the rise of this extraordinary player. Christian Ronaldo first proved himself as a champion player for Manchester United before joining Real Madrid for a record fee and becoming a legend there.

The son of poor parents in Madeira, Portugal, Ronaldo’s mother was determined to help him escape poverty. Playing with other children in the streets, Christiano would dance with the ball learning all the tricks and even by the age of 10 he was focussed on becoming the best in the world. The national youth coach was so impressed by him saying ‘it was like watching a magic show’.

Ultimately Rinaldo has gone on to be one of the greatest players of all time and now at the age of 41 years he has been named in the Portugal squad for the 2026 World Cup.
