Prep

Last Thursday evening, families attended Prayers in Pyjamas. Thank you to the families who participated in this event. Over the years, it has become a highlight on the SFX event calendar. Families had the opportunity to experience three types of prayer activities that take place in the classrooms. It was wonderful to see families working with their children during the activities.

Maths

The Preps are learning to solve subtraction number stories using various strategies such as identifying key information in a worded problem, drawing a picture and crossing out, using concrete materials, ten frames and fingers. They are encouraged to use mathematical language such as part, whole, take away, and difference to explain their reasoning.

Literacy

We have been reading Gerald the Giraffe and using the text to support the meaning of rich vocabulary words such as clumsy and splendid. They have also been retelling the story using a story map. Using the story map, the students identified the characters, the setting, the problem, feelings and the solution in the story. Then, using their knowledge of the text, the students identified sentence fragments and added a noun or verb to change the fragment into a simple sentence. The Preps also had the opportunity to change the setting of the story; this is called story innovation. In pairs, they retold the story using the new setting.

Inquiry

Learning about the body has sparked the interest of the Prep students. Last week we labelled the main external parts of the body, and we have been discussing the functions of the internal structures and organs such as the spine, bones, brain, stomach and lungs. This week, we have been identifying our five senses and their purpose in our lives.

Sport

Over the next three weeks, Liam and Kyle will be assisting Mr Brendan during the sports lessons. They will teach the students skills to prepare them to play basketball. It was wonderful to see the Preps having a 'go'and enjoying the games.
