Last Friday, 30 August, two teams of Year 6 students competed in four games of AFL 9v9. We are happy to announce that both teams won through to the Region finals.

We would like to give a special thanks to Ms Hocking and Ms Steward for organising the event and supporting us. Another special thank you to Rif and Sid who coached the teams.

Wishing everyone good luck for the region finals on September 16th.

District Athletics Carnival

Seventy-eight students from Years 3 to 6 competed at Bill Sewart Athletics Track on Tuesday 3rd September. The children trained well for all their events - shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump, 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m and circular relay.

They proudly represented Essex Heights and supported their teammates throughout the day. All students should be very proud of their efforts and achievements. Congratulations to those children who received ribbons for placing first to fourth, they will represent the district at the Division event in Term 4, on Wednesday 9th October.

Sporting events like these wouldn’t run without the valuable help from our school community. A huge thanks to Edwina McCarthy who volunteered to assist. Thank you to Ms Lim and Miss Graham for marshalling the students for their events. Thanks to Miss Boles for organising the boys’ discus and Miss Kemp for organising the students at the finish line while I was busy recording the results!

Congratulations to all the students.

It was a terrific day!

Monique Hocking

On the 3rd September many students went to represent Essex Heights in track and field events. We competed against Burwood East PS, Mount Scopus College, Jells Park PS, Mount Waverley PS and Wheelers Hill PS. It was such a wonderful opportunity for the Year 6 students seeing as it was our last Athletics day for Essex Heights PS. We enjoyed competing in the high jump, 100m, relay, shot put and discus.

On behalf of all the competitors we would like to say a massive thank you to all the teachers and parents who came to support. A big thank you to Ms Hocking for organising the event.

Year 6 Tee-Ball Team Shines at Division Finals

Our Year 6 boys Tee-Ball team had an exciting day at the Division finals on Friday 9th August, showcasing their spirit and teamwork. Over the course of three thrilling games, against Mount Waverley P.S., Wheelers Hill P.S. and Glendal P.S. the team managed to secure one win. Despite the ups and downs, the day was filled with smiles, sunshine, laughter, and some fantastic plays.

We wish to congratulate players for their dedication and enthusiasm leading up to the day. We are so proud of how they cheered each other on and never lost their team spirit. While the final scoreboard wasn’t in their favour, the real victory was the fun they had and the memories they created.

A big thank you to all the parents and supporters who met us at the Waverley Softball Centre, and those who stayed to cheer for our young athletes. Your encouragement made the day even more special. Thank you also to Monique Hocking for organising all of the logistics of the day. We appreciate your hard work and dedication.

EHPS Olympics

The House Captains chose their country to represent their house during our mini-Olympics activities. Children participated in tabloid sports and house competitions during their sports sessions, earning points for their country.

Activities included shuttle relay, bowling, hurdles, basketball shooting, soccer, tennis and golf putting.

The final placings for each country after calculating all the points from each year level were as follows:

  • 1st – Kenya (Drysdale)
  • 2nd – Japan (Boyd)
  • 3rd – Netherlands (Nolan)
  • 4th – Brazil (Lindsay)

Congratulations to everyone for competing and displaying great sportsmanship!

SSV National Hockey

Between 19th and 23rd August I represented Victoria to play in the School Sport Australia 12 and under boys’ hockey in Cairns, Queensland. We played six games across four days. We lost four matches, drew once and a win, it was hot and humid. In total we came fifth out of seven. I enjoyed all the games a lot. On Wednesday all the players from each state went to the Hartley’s crocodile adventures. It was enjoyable seeing live crocodiles and getting to know other players.

The biggest highlights of the tournament were that we got to speak and listen to Olympians - Matt Ghodes and Renee Taylor. They shared their goals as a child and their ups and downs to achieve such high levels. I also was really happy swapping pins with each team after each match and swapping shirts with Western Australia and Tasmania between the end of the tournament and the closing ceremony. I really enjoyed the whole experience and wish to do it again next year.

Ryan W (Year 6)

Congratulations Ryan for being selected to represent Victoria at the National Hockey Championships. It sounds like you had a wonderful experience. Essex Heights Primary School is very proud of your achievements.
