Junior School

你 好 (ni hao) Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 families,

This week, foundation have been continuing their exploration of where food comes from in our guided inquiry unit, 'How did that get in my lunchbox?' Students investigated fruit and vegetables and learnt that fruit has seeds, and vegetables come from the leaves, stems or roots of a plant. They discovered that tomatoes and pumpkins are actually fruit because they have seeds! They also learnt that bees are important to making fruit grow. We enjoyed our first look through the school's vegetable garden with a scavenger hunt.

Students also learnt about wheat and how flour is made. They explored different foods that are made with flour, including cakes, pasta, and bread. We had lots of fun, getting into the kitchen for the first time and making pancakes with flour!

In Maths, foundation has continued learning and practising strategies for addition and subtraction, including number bonds, which visually represent addition and subtraction relationships in a ‘part-part-whole’ diagram, and number tracks/lines, which support students in visually counting forwards or backwards. Students have applied these resources and strategies to support them in solving number sentences.

In English, foundation students have been working on understanding and identifying verbs in texts and writing. They’ve been completing a text study on fairy tales and identifying the elements of story, including character, setting, problem and solution.

It has been great to see excitement towards our units this term!

Have a lovely weekend

Melinda (Miss Emmett) & Ash (Foundation), Beth, Cassie & Suzie (Year 1), Shaye, Emma, Ella & Chelsea (Year 2)
