AIC Term 4 Gala Days

Good luck to all boys participating in the AIC Gala Days this weekend, which will be dependent on weather/ field closures. The decision will be made Wednesday afternoon if fields will be available to play on. Optimistically, AIC Touch (Primary) Friday 23, (Secondary) Saturday 24, eSports Saturday 24 and Water Polo Sunday 25. These are great opportunities for boys to showcase their skills and ability in different areas. My thanks are extended to the staff who are involved in these activities. Final details, including draws, will be released by coordinators once finalised.

  • Touch - Mr Lachlan Gough
  • eSports - Mr Andrew Gibbs
  • Water Polo - Mr Ryan Apps

Basketball – CBSQ Junior Secondary

Congratulations to our Junior Secondary (Years 9-10) team who competed in Div 2 at the CBSQ championships on the weekend. The boys competed exceptionally well throughout the tournament, challenging every opposition and demonstrating great determination and teamwork. In our first year competing in Division 2, the team achieved an impressive 8th-place finish out of 16 teams, a fantastic achievement and a strong foundation to build upon in future years. Thank you to Mr James Lymer, Mr Stephen Carroll and Mr Jonte Brown who coached and supported the team over the weekend.

Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

It has been fantastic to see so many of our boys returning to the pool this week, particularly those who have been involved in the College's athletics program.

One of the great things about Marist is the wide range of sporting opportunities available to our boys. As we move into Term 4, we begin to see that full circle of athletes returning to swimming after representing the College in other sports throughout the year.

I fully appreciate that we are approaching the end of what has been a very busy year. The boys are tired, and after balancing schoolwork, training and sporting commitments, it is understandable that motivation can sometimes be a challenge. However, this is where our commitment, discipline and consistency become so important.

If we are serious about going one better at AIC Swimming this season, we need to understand that it will take a collective effort from the entire team.

We are fortunate to have some outstanding individual swimmers within our program, but we cannot rely on a handful of athletes to carry us on AIC Day. Success at AIC is built on the contribution of every swimmer, across every age group and every event. When we all commit to the work, we share the responsibility, strengthen the team and give ourselves the best opportunity to succeed.

AIC Swimming is not about a few individuals being successful. It is about an entire team working towards the same goal.

Swimming is a demanding sport, and improvement requires consistent training. Attending one session a week simply isn't enough if we want to be competitive and make a meaningful contribution to the team.

For our Years 7–12 swimmers, I want to set a clear challenge. We have 18 weeks until AIC Day, and our expectation is a minimum of three training sessions per week. That gives every boy a target of 54 training sessions between now and AIC Day.

While 18 weeks might sound like a long time, in swimming terms it isn't. There is a significant amount of work to be done, and the habits we establish now will have a direct impact on how we perform when it matters most.

In last week's newsletter, I outlined the three phases of our preparation for the season. We are currently in Phase One, which is all about rebuilding consistency, getting the boys comfortable in the water again and establishing the foundations for the work ahead.

This phase is not necessarily about swimming fast. It is about turning up, doing the basics well, rebuilding fitness and developing the discipline that will allow us to take the next step when Phase Two begins over the Christmas holidays.

We cannot expect to achieve the results we want in March if we are not prepared to put in the work during October, November and December.

It has been extremely encouraging to see so many boys back in the water, and I am looking forward to welcoming a few more familiar faces back over the coming days.

My challenge to every swimmer is simple: Don't wait until AIC Day to start contributing to the team. Your contribution starts now, every time you turn up to training.

If we want to achieve something special this season, we need to do it together.

I hope everyone has a fantastic Week 3, and I look forward to another strong week of training.

Marist Track and Field | QRSS 10-12 Years State Titles

Congratulations to our students who competed in the Queensland Representative School Sport Track and Field last week. On the back of their exceptional form during the AIC season, the following students continued to perform well at the next level of competition.

Gallery Image
Arlo Swenson
Arlo Swenson

Arlo Swenson (Year 5) broke his 10 years 1500m record. Arlo has been in consistently strong form and has now set a new mark on three occasions in 2026. His new record of 5:02.59 is a credit to his excellent training ethic and commitment to improvement.

Magnus Millwater (Year 7) won a bronze in the 12 years High Jump meaning he qualifies for the Junior School Nationals in Melbourne in December 2026. Magnus has worked hard and continued to improve his all round technical skills across 2026.

Harry Somerville (Year 7) finished 5th in the Shot Put with a throw of 12.23m. After finishing 1st in the AIC, Harry improved his distance and should be very happy with his strong show at the State Titles.

Leo Mylne (Year 6) ran strongly in the 200m heats. However after a big week of events during the AIC program, including his two AIC record runs, Leo had to withdraw from the final due to hamstring tightness.

Marist Track and Field | Twelve in a Row

Marist Track and Field writes another chapter. A 12th successive secondary title, a 6th successive primary title. Think about what twelve successive titles means. No student currently at the College has ever seen the program lose the AIC secondary championship. At the 2026 championships that run reached twelve, while our primary squad claimed its sixth title in a row.

Winning when it was hardest and a squad that refused to be beaten. This was no easy victory! With the Queensland State Titles just a weekend earlier, injuries and tired legs forced up to 16 athlete change sheets on Day 1, with a similar number on Day 2. Our athletes answered every call. Toby Patricks stepped up from 13 Years to the 15 Years 1500m. Henry Moore moved into the Open discus team and won Division 2. When a hurdler was injured at marshalling, Eric Kim sprinted across the venue to find Magnus Millwater, who ran the hurdles and then returned to the high jump to finish on the podium.

The AIC schools continued to challenge our team and keep us on our toes. This is one of the leading school meets in the country, and nothing was guaranteed. After Day 1 we led Iona by 116 points, while the schools placed second to eighth were separated by fewer than 50.

Whilst we missed the 12 Years trophy by just half a point, tour age groups won every remaining trophy from 13 Years to Open. The final margin of 262.5 points was our second most dominant win in recent years, behind only 2025.

Numbers worth pausing on -

  • 8 of 12 first places in the secondary 200m
  • Half of the 24 secondary 100m races won
  • An 83.3% podium rate in the 800m
  • Four podiums from seven relays

Records

Hayden Lockhart set a new AIC record in the 100m (10.84s), and also won five of his six events. Year 6 athlete Leo Mylne broke the AIC records for both the 100m (12.64s) and 200m (25.86s). The Open 4x100m relay team of Isaac Ting, Ben Hawley, Bob Ackerie and Riley Hansel set a new AIC record of 42.81s. The U16 4x100m relay team of Dusty Miller, Guy de Putron, Darcy Webb and Hayden Lockhart set a new College record of 43.59s.

The army behind the result

Results like these are built by many people. Our thanks go to Co-Head Coaches Mr Rob Martin and Mr Thomas Prole, and the whole coaching team, whose expertise and dedication prepared the athletes so well. Thanks also to Mr Richard Graham for keeping hundreds of athletes organised and on time. Captains Connor Campbell, Isaac Ting and Harry Prole, with vice captains Lucas Boshoff and Lyndon Maynard, led the group with real character.

Thanks also to the broader College community for their wonderful support. Success like this takes a lot of different bodies, alignment and understanding. We are extremely appreciative to you all.

Marist Track and Field | Sunday Sessions

Mr Martin will continue to run his Sunday sessions for any students preparing for the Nationals in December or interested in continuing to improve their Track and Field capabilities.

Please note, this Sunday will be running only. There will be NO field events.

Marist Track and Field | Pathways

Looking beyond October, there are plenty of options to stay involved in Track and Field for the remainder of 2026 and beyond.

Over the past few seasons, we have had students follow a range of different pathways to remain involved in Track and Field competitions.

Some students will continue training for upcoming State and National events, while others will focus on training and preparation for the following season. Below, Mr Martin and Mr Prole have outlined some pathway options to help families better understand the opportunities available.

OPTION 1 - QLD ATHLETICS ALL SCHOOLS CHAMPS (Qualifier for All Schools Nationals)

As a pathway to further develop your athletics, a number of students may wish to compete at the Queensland All Schools Championships (October 1–4), with the opportunity to qualify for Nationals in Perth in December if you finish in the Top 2. There is no pre-qualifying time or distance required for the Queensland All Schools Championships; simply register, pay the entry fee and compete in your Marist T&F uniform.

All keen athletes between 12–17 years can compete if you register as per the instructions below. Note that for this meet, 12-year-olds will compete in the 13 Years age group.

Steps to register as follows –

STEP 1: Get a Membership -

Register as a Base Member ($0 member fee, No Club) OR register with a Club (e.g. Ashgrove Rangers – different membership level and club fees apply).

Cost - $32 per event at States for non-members, or $10–$22 per event with Platinum/Gold membership.

Link to Register: Queensland Athletics Membership

If you wish to compete in Perth in 2026 if you qualify, you should register with a club such as Ashgrove Rangers (member details below).

STEP 2: Register for the Queensland All Schools Titles

Link to Register: Queensland All Schools Titles Registration

NOTE - Entries close 9am Tuesday 22 September. There are no extensions to this deadline.

Competition Dates: Thu 1 - Sun 4 October

OPTION 2 - 2026 JUNIOR CLUB PATHWAY

For those wishing to enter the club season and potentially qualify for Nationals in April 2027, you can similarly register for membership with a club and compete at a range of pre-meets before the Queensland State Club Championships in March 2027. These meets will begin in late October 2026. Registering as a member in STEP 1 above will start the process.

Boys can qualify through entry standards. This can be a great incentive as it provides athletes with a clear time or distance to work towards. The main thing to note is that these championships begin at U14 level (or U13 in our school age-group system).

Australian Athletics Entry Standards

STEP 1: Get a Membership - Register as a Base Member (No Club) OR register with a Club (e.g. Ashgrove Rangers – base member fee + club fee).

Note that different levels of membership have different fees and options.

Link to Register: Queensland Athletics Membership

OPTION 3 - LITTLE ATHLETICS PATHWAY

For junior athletes in Years 5 and 6 in particular, Little Athletics can be a great introduction to competition and provides an opportunity to learn the basic movements and techniques before progressing with more specialised coaching in your preferred events. Arana Hills Little Athletics and The Gap Little Athletics are two nearby options for Marist athletes.

Arana Hills Little Athletics     The Gap Little Athletics

OPTION 4 - Sunday Sessions

Most Sundays, Mr Martin and members of the coaching team will continue to offer off-season running, fitness, sprints and selected field events, depending on those attending. Except for some State Championship weekends and major meets, these sessions will continue throughout the year. They provide an opportunity to support your other sports while developing speed, fitness and athletic ability.

Students can also discuss training options for their preferred events with Mr Martin and Mr Prole, with guidance available on finding external coaches if required to progress further.

GENERAL QUERY - WHAT MEMBERSHIP DO I NEED?

If you have any questions about the above pathways, please contact Mr Martin at robin.martin@bigpond.com or Mr Thomas Prole at prolet@marash.qld.edu.au. They can step you through the process and assist with any questions from parents.

QLD Athletics All Schools Pathway | National All Schools Qualifier

For those pursuing representative pathways, the Queensland Athletics All Schools Championships will provide a qualification opportunity for the National All Schools Championships in Perth in December 2026.

The Queensland Athletics All Schools Championships will be held on the last weekend of the school holidays. All athletes aged 12–17 years are eligible to register and compete.

Those interested in pursuing this pathway are encouraged to register and participate. More information will follow, but please register early and speak with a Mr Martin or Mr Prole if you have any questions or concerns.

Please note: This pathway is separate from the Met North pathway to the Queensland Secondary Schools Championships in mid-October.

Marist Rugby Union | Term 4 Optional Preseason Training

Preseason rugby union training for current Year 9-11 students has been underway for a week. This is an optional five-week training block that runs from Week 2-6, Term 4.

Thanks to all those who have attended the preseason program. It was a challenging start with both the rain and the tough blocks of training, however it has been pleasing to see the effort and connection of the group in this early stage.

Anyone interested is welcome. This is a fantastic opportunity for any interested students to learn how to train both on the field and in the gym.

Mr Richard Graham, Mr Chris Daykin, Mr Ieti Fetalaiga and Mr Charlie Taylor will lead the field sessions, whilst the athletic development will be under the guidance of our Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Mr Adam Earnshaw and assisted by Mr Drew Smith.

5 HEARTY BREAKFAST OPTIONS POST TRAINING TO AID RECOVERY AND PREPARE FOR SCHOOL

1. Egg and cheese breakfast roll

Scrambled or fried eggs, cheese and a slice of ham or bacon in a wholemeal roll or English muffin. Wrap it in foil or cling wrap. It's high in protein and keeps well for a few hours.

2. Overnight oats jar

Rolled oats, milk and a spoonful of Greek yoghurt, topped with banana or berries and a drizzle of honey. Made the night before and eaten cold from the jar. It gives slow-release energy for the morning's classes.

3. Peanut butter and banana wrap

A wholemeal wrap with peanut butter, sliced banana and a sprinkle of oats or chia seeds. It takes two minutes to make and is easy to eat on the go. (Swap in sunflower seed butter if your school is nut-free.)

4. Greek yoghurt power pot

A tub of Greek yoghurt layered with muesli or granola and fruit, plus a boiled egg or cheese stick on the side. Pack it in a container with a spoon.

5. Chicken and salad toastie or sandwich

Leftover roast or shredded chicken, cheese, lettuce and tomato on wholegrain bread. Pair it with a piece of fruit. It's a bit more filling than a standard sandwich, which suits boys who've just trained hard.

3 SMOOTHIES TO MAKE AND BRING

1. Banana oat smoothie

Banana, rolled oats, milk and a spoonful of honey or peanut butter. Blend until smooth. It's thick, filling and good for sustained energy.

2. Berry protein smoothie

Frozen mixed berries, Greek yoghurt, milk and a handful of spinach (you can't taste it). Blend well. It's high in protein and also gives them some fruit and veg.

3. Chocolate recovery smoothie

Milk, a banana, a tablespoon of cocoa powder and a spoonful of yoghurt or oats. Chocolate milk is a well-known recovery drink after training, and this is a more nutritious version that boys tend to like.

Tips for Students

  • Prep the night before. Keep it simple enough that it doesn't become a morning battle.
  • Use an insulated bag with an ice brick for anything containing egg, meat or dairy, as it will sit in a school bag for a while.
  • Bring water as well. Smoothies don't replace hydration after an early morning session.
  • Aim for carbs plus protein. The carbs refuel energy and the protein helps recovery, and together they keep them alert for the first lesson.

Marist Rugby Union | Scrum Club

Last week, Mr Doug Perrers led a willing group of forwards at the Term 4 Scrum Club program.

While the rugby union scrum is a means of restarting play after a stoppage, safety must always be our key focus when forming scrums.

A key part of rugby safety at the College is educating and supporting students' development. The Scrum Ready Conditioning Program will continue to take students through the journey of developing and conditioning individual body strength, control and shape.

It is fantastic to see boys willing to improve this aspect of their game. The scrum is an integral and unique part of Rugby Union, and the contest between two well-coached and well-conditioned packs is both compelling and exciting.

Effective scrummaging requires teamwork. Each individual must understand their role, how to be an effective scrummager, and how to achieve this as a member of a forward unit.

The aims of all the Marist Scrum Ready Program is to -

  1. Educate students on key strengthening exercises
  2. Educate students on the correct technique
  3. Develop the ability to maintain a safe, strong and stable body
  4. position
  5. Reduce injury risk by improving the above

The Scrum Club program will consist of one on field session and one gym session per week.
