Year 1 News

This week has been full of excitement for us in year 1! We welcomed some work-experience students who were former St Fidelis students, and a student teacher in 1AM. We also had an engaging incursion and participated in our annual Walk To School Day.
As readers, we have been focusing on identifying different adjectives in our shared texts and making connections between the events and characters in the stories and our own experiences and feelings. During guided reading groups, we have been using our knowledge of digraphs, blends, long vowel sounds and syllables to decode unfamiliar words. We have also been practising reading with accuracy, fluency and intonation, so that our reading sounds smooth and expressive.
As mathematicians, we tuned in to Measurement and began exploring the concept of Length. We used informal units, such as blocks, counters and playing cards, to measure and compare the length of different objects. As thinkers, we focused on selecting an appropriate unit of measurement and measuring from the beginning point to the end point of the object with no gaps. We also ordered objects according to their length.
As inquirers, we continued to explore Toys and Technology and how they have changed over time. We engaged in a hands-on and interactive incursion with expert Emma from Supreme Incursions. As curious researchers, we found out about toys from hundreds and even thousands of years ago, such as spinning tops, wind-up music boxes and even a Jack-in-the-Boxes. There were tables filled with toys from both the past and present, giving us time and opportunity to investigate, collaborate and explore together. We enjoyed playing with yoyos, skipping ropes, hula hoops, Lego, trains, marbles, slinkies and push-and-pull toys. Our teachers also joined in on the fun, reminiscing about toys from their own childhoods, such as elastics, knuckles, Game Boys, Furbies and Mr Potato Head. We had so much fun exploring so many different toys and made lots of interesting discoveries along the way!
Our week ended with our annual Walk to School Day. Many of our staff and families met at Shore Reserve or along Reynard St and enjoyed walking to school together. When we arrived at school, we were treated to a delicious breakfast of cereal and fruit, kindly provided by MACSeye. The morning concluded with a wonderful Whole School Prayer presented by 1OB. Congratulations to 1OB on leading their first assembly for 2026! 1 AM will lead us in prayer in Week 6, and 1CW will lead us in Week 7.
