Year 5/6 News

In Literacy, we have continued reading our class novel, Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. Students have been learning about morphemes and exploring how many words are made up of a base word with added prefixes and suffixes that change their meaning. They have enjoyed creating their own word sums to demonstrate their understanding. In Writing, students have been developing their sentence structure skills by learning how to expand sentences using detailed noun groups. There has been a particular focus on adding circumstances to enrich their writing by explaining who, what, when, where, why and how.
In Mathematics, we have completed our Fractions unit, and students were assessed on their learning and understanding. Throughout the unit, students developed their skills in identifying, comparing and ordering fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators.
In Religion, we have been exploring the Eucharist and investigating how different scripture stories help us to better understand its meaning and significance within our faith. Students have reflected on how the Eucharist brings people together, reminds us of Jesus’ love and sacrifice, and strengthens our connection with God and others.
In Inquiry, students have been working both collaboratively and independently to create a Lotus Diagram showcasing their experiences and learning from our camp at Sovereign Hill. Students have reflected on key aspects of life during the gold rush era and organised their ideas creatively to demonstrate their understanding.
In TRP, students explored the benefits of mindfulness and living in the present moment. Through a “human camera” activity, students focused on observing the details of everyday objects and reflected on how busy lives can sometimes stop us from noticing what is happening around us. Students discussed how mindfulness can help improve focus, awareness and wellbeing.
Inter school sports
We had our first round of interschool sports against Coburg Primary School. Although results did not go our way on the field, all students should be commended for the way they represented the school with pride, teamwork and a positive attitude. It was wonderful to see students trying their best, supporting one another and displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.
