Year 1 News

Reading

During Reading sessions the past two weeks, students have been practising the skill of inferring using pictures. They have been making inferences about what is happening in a picture using the clues in the picture and their prior knowledge. It was fantastic to see students come up with some very impressive inferences. Students have also continued to practise answering retrieval questions using information in a text. It has been great to see students consolidate their knowledge of retrieval questions.

Students then had the opportunity to write a recount about their experience. It was amazing to see students use time connectives such as first, then and next in their writing. In Grammar and Punctuation lessons, students have continued working on adjectives that are used to describe nouns. In handwriting, students have continued to practise the formation of letters on dotted thirds.

Inquiry

Over the past fortnight, the Year 1 students have been exploring different features of landscapes through their Inquiry learning. They learnt about natural, managed and constructed features and discussed how each type can be identified in everyday environments. Students visited the school oval to observe and draw the different features they could see around them, helping them connect their learning to the real world.

The students also explored the night sky and investigated the phases of the moon and different constellations. They enjoyed learning how constellations are made up of groups of stars and used toothpicks and marshmallows to create their own constellation models. This hands-on activity helped students build their understanding of patterns in the night sky in a fun and engaging way.

They used their hands to trace and create colourful flowers and a vase, showing creativity and care while making their thoughtful gifts.

Students also explored what it means to play responsibly and discussed ways they can make safe and fair choices during playtime. Through class discussions and activities, they learnt how to include others, share equipment and solve small problems respectfully.

As part of their SWPBS learning, students focused on the meaning of respect and identified ways they can show respect towards their classmates, teachers and school environment each day.
