Year 5 News

Reading
Over the last fortnight, the Year 5 students have been working on summarising fiction and non-fiction texts. They read a page or chapter from their book and identified the most effective summarising strategy to use.
To summarise fiction texts, students used strategies such as Beginning, Middle, End; Somebody Wanted But So Then (SWBST); and Look, Cover, Say, Check.
To summarise non-fiction texts, students identified the main idea and used supporting details to summarise the information.

“I used the beginning-middle-end strategy. It was a little bit easy and a little bit hard” - Sofia 5A

Writing
This fortnight in Writing, the Year 5 cohort has been continuing their work on country information reports and transforming them into engaging brochures. Students have been refining their research, organising key facts, and presenting information in clear, well-structured sections.
They have also been focusing on layout, design, and visual features to make their brochures informative and appealing to readers. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and effort students are putting into showcasing their knowledge, while developing their skills in both writing and presentation.

Maths
In the last fortnight, Year 5 students have been learning about area and perimeter. Students explored the difference between perimeter, the distance around a shape, and area, the amount of space inside a shape. They practised measuring and calculating the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes and finding the area of different shapes using efficient multiplication and addition strategies.
Students have applied their learning through problem-solving tasks and real-world examples, helping them understand how measurement is used in everyday life. We encourage families to continue discussing measurement at home by identifying shapes and estimating or measuring spaces around the house or outdoors. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence and persistence in their mathematical thinking.
“Area was hard, but perimeter was easy. It was fun calculating them” - Jahnavi 5A
“When you work out perimeter, you have to add all the sides up” - Hassen 5A
“Perimeter is the outside of a shape and area is the inside.” - Dion 5C
Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, the Year 5 cohort presented their learning on Indigenous groups from around the world and completed an assessment to showcase their understanding. Students confidently shared their knowledge of different cultures, highlighting traditions, histories, and connections to land.
They also explored the role of the United Nations and discussed human rights, with a focus on how these rights impact Indigenous peoples globally. This learning encouraged students to think critically about fairness, equality, and the importance of respecting and protecting the rights of all people.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS
In SEL this fortnight, the Year 5 students have continued exploring personal strengths. In Week 2, the focus was on developing self-calming techniques. In groups, students were given a scenario and asked to identify the causes of stress and discuss strategies the person could use to calm themselves down.
In Week 3, the students learnt about ANZAC Day and what the day represents. They analysed a collection of World War I paintings and discussed the meaning and messages behind each artwork.

They also learnt some new signs related to a picnic, including the signs for cake, meat and sandwich.
“For the sign meat, you point your finger at your neck” - Josiah 5A
Special Event
Buddy Picnic
This fortnight, the Year 5 cohort enjoyed a special buddy picnic with their Year 1 and 2 buddies. Students spent time outdoors playing games like Fruit Salad, drawing with chalk, and eating lunch together.
It was a wonderful opportunity to build connections, show kindness, and strengthen relationships across year levels. The relaxed setting allowed students to socialise, have fun, and create positive memories together as part of our supportive school community.
