Year 2 News

Reading

During Reading, students have been working on retelling both fiction and non-fiction texts. They have practised carefully reading a text and then re-reading to identify key information. For fiction texts, students focused on understanding who, what, when and why, while for non-fiction texts, they worked on locating important facts and details. Students are building their ability to retell the most important information in their own words, helping to strengthen their comprehension and understanding of what they read.

Writing

In the past fortnight, Year 2 students have continued to develop their understanding of boundary punctuation during grammar lessons. They have strengthened their use of capital letters and full stops, and explored how to use exclamation marks to show strong feelings or emotions at the end of a sentence. Year 2 students worked on writing sentences about an animal of their choice and applied their knowledge of boundary punctuation.

Additionally, the Year 2 students have written a recount about their buddy picnic. They used their knowledge of boundary punctuation to write sentences about who they had a picnic with, where they had the picnic and what they got up to. It was a great opportunity to see the students putting their writing skills into action.

This fortnight in Year 2 the students have been learning about seasons. They have discussed the typical weather they expect in each season but now understand the weather can always change and sometimes feel like a different season. They focused on summer and spring thinking about what the weather might be like, what activities they do during this time and what clothing they wear that is appropriate for the season.

Social and Emotional Learning / SWPBS

In SEL Year 2 students focused on telling the whole truth and being honest. Firstly, students had a discussion about the importance of being honest and telling the whole truth about incidents that occur in the classroom and outside during recess and lunch. Students then thought of various scenarios and role-played them with their peers.

In Respectful Relationship lessons, students practised ways to help friends solve problems. Firstly, they discussed what a ‘Good Friend’ is and ways they could use their strengths to be a ‘Good Friend’, then they discovered that when friends work together they can help others with their problems.

To honour the fallen soldiers, students first listened to the bugle, which was followed by a minute's silence. In classrooms, students completed an activity to remember the brave service men and women.

Mother’s Day

For Mother’s Day, Year 2 students wrote meaningful statements such as “I love you because…”, “You are the best because…”, and “I appreciate how you…”, and created thoughtful cards for their mothers, nans, and/or carers. Students demonstrated their best handwriting to impress their loved ones.
