Our young artists jumped straight into an exciting range of creative projects this week, exploring new media, historical traditions, and core art elements. Here is a snapshot of what each year level achieved:
Prep – Shape Robots:
Students identified 2D shapes (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, stars) and designed robots by arranging and overlapping cut paper shapes on paper before gluing them down. The lesson finished with a quiet gallery walk to view each other's work.
Grade 1 – "Lambscapes" Backgrounds:
Exploring foreground, middle ground, and background, students drew rolling hills and sky details with pencil. They then colored their hills using different shades of green with paint slicks, painted the sky, and drew fence lines with black markers.
Grade 2 – Paper Weaving:
After exploring weaving traditions from Ghana, Peru, Japan, and Aboriginal Australia, students practiced paper weaving. They folded paper, cut vertical slits to create the warp, and wove colored paper strips over and under across
the page.
Grade 3 – 3D Cylinder Mugs:
Following a step-by-step guided drawing, students used curved lines and ellipses to draw a 3D mug (cylinder). They then decorated the mug and handle with black-and-white patterns and addedbrown paint slick into the top oval to represent hot chocolate.
Grade 4 – Chalk Pastel Smudging:
Students created a layered, geometric background using chalk pastels. They cut a pointed pattern along the edges of a sheet of paper, traced chalk along the border, and firmly held it in place while smudging the chalk outward onto their base sheet.
Grade 5 – Landmark Research & Sketching:
Working in pairs with iPads, students selected a world country and a famous landmark. They researched and recorded 3 to 5 facts about the site and practiced observational pencil sketches of the landmark.
Grade 6 – Mood & Texture Collages:
Students chose an emotion or mood (such as calm, energetic, or mysterious) and selected matching colors of textured and magazine paper. They cut or tore the papers into strips and layered them into a collage background.
