Grade 2 Community News

It has been another fantastic week in Grade 2! We have been busy learning new skills, challenging ourselves and making great progress across all areas of our learning.

✏️ Spelling

This week, we have been learning about contractions, e.g. I am → I’m. Students have been learning that an apostrophe is used to show where letters have been left out when two words are joined together. They have done a fantastic job recognising and using contractions in their spelling and writing!

📚 Comprehension & Fluency

We have been developing our reading comprehension and fluency by applying the reading skills we have learnt, including predicting, inferring and summarising. Students have worked hard to use these skills to answer questions and show their understanding of different texts. It has been wonderful to see their confidence continue to grow as readers!

🎵 Poetry

We have been exploring poetry, learning about rhyme and rhythm and how these features influence the way a poem sounds and feels when it is read aloud. Students have really enjoyed experimenting with words and sounds.

As part of our poetry learning, students created their own ‘Five Senses’ poem, describing what they could see, hear, smell, taste and touch when they visited a park or another favourite place. They did a wonderful job using descriptive language to bring their favourite places to life!

🔢 Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about place value and regrouping 3-digit numbers. Students have been exploring how hundreds, tens and ones can be regrouped in different ways while still representing the same number. They have worked hard to explain their thinking and have shown great progress in understanding the value of each digit.

We have also been learning to compare the area of different surfaces using informal units, such as Unifix blocks, and the term ‘square units’. Students have been practising identifying which shapes have a larger or smaller area and finding the difference between the two areas. It has been lovely to see their confidence continue to grow as they develop their Maths skills.

It has been another busy and wonderful week in Grade 2, and we are so proud of their hard work.
