Dear Grade 4 Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 4! We are excited to continue our learning journey with a range of engaging activities designed to challenge and inspire our students.
Literacy Blocks
In Language Comprehension, students will engage in a novel study on the book Leo and Ralph by Peter Carnavas. This is a heartwarming story about friendship, growing up, and celebrating differences. Throughout this unit, students will learn new vocabulary and practise comprehension and inference skills through a range of activities.
In Writing, students are crafting narratives using the structure of The Writing Revolution. They will practise punctuating dialogue and direct speech, using complex sentences, and applying figurative and descriptive language to enhance their writing. In addition, students will revisit persuasive writing, applying their knowledge of structure and language features to construct clear and convincing arguments.
Spelling sessions will continue with the Spelling Mastery program, which explicitly teaches spelling rules, strategies, and patterns in a sequenced way. This program not only improves accuracy but also builds confidence and helps students recognise connections between spelling, reading, and writing. Alongside this, students will continue to practise handwriting to improve fluency, speed, and presentation in their written work.
Maths
In Numeracy, Daily Reviews will continue to reinforce fluency and strengthen key skills. Students will also complete daily Facts on Fire fluency practice across all operations, with a strong focus on division facts. This term, students will extend their understanding of place value to hundredths and further develop their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through written algorithms and worded problems. They will apply these skills to real-life money contexts, including calculating total prices and change. Students will also explore multiples, solve missing number problems and practise finding unit fractions of whole numbers. In Measurement and Geometry, students will identify different types of angles and explore rotation, reflection and symmetry. They will measure and compare the volume of objects using cubic centimetres, practise reading scales to determine mass in grams, and use addition and multiplication to calculate the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. In Statistics and Probability, students will conduct investigations, collect data and organise their findings using tally charts. They will also carry out chance experiments, record their results and discuss what they notice.
Units of Work
In Term Four, students will engage with two Units of Work: Earth and Space Science and Chemical Science. In Earth and Space Science, students will differentiate between rocks and minerals, explain how minerals form rocks, and explore the physical properties of different rock types. They will also investigate parts of space, linking their learning to the themes in Leo and Ralph. Another focus will be on Chemical Science. Throughout this unit, students will explore how weather events and climate affect the land, air, water and living things, and how human activities can influence climate.
