Weekly Values Focus - Resilience

Week 4: Footscray West students ask for help and use supports
At Footscray West, we know that asking for help is a strength! Sometimes we can work things out by ourselves, and sometimes we need support from a teacher, friend or another trusted person. Knowing when to ask for help is an important part of being a confident and resilient learner. We do not need to struggle on our own when someone can help us take the next step.
We can ask for help by first thinking about what we already know and what we have tried. For example, if we are stuck on a maths problem, we might look at an example, try a different strategy or reread the question before asking for support. We can then explain, “I tried this strategy, but I got stuck here.” This helps the person supporting us understand our thinking and gives us a chance to learn from their advice.
Using support does not mean someone does the work for us. We can listen carefully to advice, ask questions and then have another go ourselves. Sometimes a teacher might give us a hint, a friend might explain something in a different way, or we might use a classroom resource to help us. Showing resilience means using these supports to keep learning, even when the task continues to feel challenging.
Next week, let’s notice when we might need a little help and remember that it is okay to ask. What have you already tried? Who or what could support you? How can you use the advice you receive to have another go?
When we ask for help, listen to advice and keep trying, we become more independent and confident learners.
