VCE Drama Excursion

Melbourne Arts Centre

As part of their unit on Australian Identify, Year 11 Drama students recently travelled to the city to see a performance called ‘Saplings’ at the Melbourne Arts Centre.

This play was about young people navigating the youth justice system. The cast, which was made up of three indigenous and one non-indigenous actors, played multiple roles in a collection of heartbreaking and sometimes hilarious stories, based on real life experiences.

Not only was this a great theatre experience, it opened up the audience’s eyes to the complexities and challenges faced by young people caught up in disadvantage, crime and a justice system that is not always just.

After the performance we were lucky enough to meet and chat with three of the young actors. This was followed by lunch at Southgate and the day was topped off by delicious real chocolate hot chocolates!
